Chapter 3 - The Empty Incubator

The sterile fluorescent lights of the recovery ward buzzed with a dull, rhythmic hum that seemed to match the erratic beat of Khloe’s heart as she slowly drifted back to consciousness. Her mouth tasted like cotton and copper, and her limbs felt as though they had been filled with lead.

She tried to move, but a dull, heavy ache radiated outward from her lower abdomen, a constant reminder of the trauma her body had just endured. Her hands flew downward in an instinctive panic, her fingers searching frantically across the crisp white cotton sheets.

Empty.

The mound that had defined her existence for the last seven months—the kicks, the turns, the heartbeat that had kept her company through the darkest hours of her isolation—was gone.

"No..." Khloe choked out, a ragged sob tearing from her throat as she tried to sit up. The monitors beside her bed immediately began to beep in a frantic, high-pitched rhythm, signaling her elevated heart rate. "No, please... my baby! Where is my baby?!"

The door to the private recovery room flew open with a sharp click, and a nurse rushed in, her face a mask of practiced calm and deep, sorrowful empathy. She hurried to the bedside, pressing a gentle hand against Khloe’s shoulder to keep her from tearing out her IV lines.

"Mrs. Vance, please, you need to lie back down. You're safe," the nurse said softly, her voice trembling just enough to betray the heavy burden of the news she was about to deliver.

"Where is my child?" Khloe screamed, her voice cracking into a high, desperate wail that echoed off the tiled walls. "Did I lose her? Tell me the truth! Did Isabella kill my baby?!"

Before the nurse could answer, another figure stepped briskly into the room. It wasn't Dr. Evans, and it wasn't Marcus. It was an older woman with sharp, aristocratic features, wearing a tailored navy Chanel suit that looked entirely out of place in a hospital ward. Eleanor Vance—Marcus’s mother, and the matriarch of the Vance family dynasty.

Eleanor’s expression was as cold and unyielding as a marble monument. She didn't rush to the bedside, nor did she offer a comforting hand. She simply stood at the foot of the bed, her dark eyes sweeping over Khloe with a look of clinical detachment that cut deeper than any scalpel.

"Quiet down, Khloe," Eleanor commanded, her voice smooth, low, and laced with absolute authority. "Screaming isn't going to change biology, and it certainly isn't going to bring dignity back to this situation."

Khloe stopped thrashing, her wide, tear-filled eyes locking onto her mother-in-law with pure horror. "Eleanor... where is my baby? Please... tell me my baby is alive."

Eleanor sighed softly, a gesture that sounded more like an expression of profound inconvenience than grief. She stepped closer to the bed, resting her manicured fingertips on the metal footboard.

"The emergency cesarean was successful in the sense that the medical team extracted the child before the placental abruption became completely fatal," Eleanor said, her voice remaining terrifyingly steady. "However, due to the extreme trauma, oxygen deprivation, and the violent nature of the physical assault... the infant was born extremely premature and with severe complications. The neonatal intensive care unit has her on full life support, but the head pediatrician has already stated that brain activity is virtually nonexistent."

The room seemed to tilt sideways. The beeping of the monitor faded into a distant, muffled hum. Khloe stared at Eleanor, her lips parting, but no sound came out. Her world—her entire reason for enduring the suffocating isolation of her marriage to Marcus, the endless scrutiny of the Vance family, and the constant, poisoned barbs thrown her way by women like Isabella—had just evaporated into thin air.

"No," Khloe whispered, shaking her head violently on the pillow. "You're lying. Marcus... Marcus wouldn't let her die. Marcus promised me he would protect us."

"Marcus is currently downstairs dealing with the police and handling the legal fallout of Isabella’s catastrophic stupidity," Eleanor said sharply, her eyes flashing with a sudden, bitter anger. "Do you have any idea what kind of scandal this is going to create for the Vance pharmaceutical patents, Khloe? The press is already sniffing around the hospital lobby. If word gets out that my son’s mistress tried to murder his pregnant wife in a private VIP suite, the stock price will plummet before the market opens on Monday."

"Is that all you care about?!" Khloe screamed, finally finding her voice as a surge of incandescent rage overpowered her grief. She tried to throw off the heavy blankets, ignoring the searing pain tearing through her surgical incision. "My child is fighting for her life upstairs, and you’re worried about your damn stock price?! Your precious lawyer tried to murder us both! She kicked me in the stomach, Eleanor! I saw her face! I felt her heel!"

"We have seen the security footage, Khloe," Eleanor interrupted, her tone instantly silencing Khloe’s outburst. Eleanor leaned forward, her gaze locking onto Khloe with an intensity that made the air feel thin. "We know exactly what Isabella did. And I assure you, Isabella will pay for her crimes. She will spend the rest of her natural life behind bars, or she will wish she had. But make no mistake—this mess started because you insisted on playing in a world you were never equipped to handle."

Before Khloe could fire back a retort, the heavy door clicked open once more.

Marcus walked in.

He looked like a man who had been put through a meat grinder. His expensive suit was wrinkled, his tie was missing, and his shirt cuffs were stained with a dark, dried streak of blood—Khloe’s blood. His eyes were bloodshot and hollow, the fierce arrogance that usually defined him completely stripped away, leaving only a terrifying, jagged emptiness.

He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw Khloe sitting up, her face streaked with tears, staring at him with a mixture of profound heartbreak and burning hatred.

"Khloe..." Marcus breathed out, his voice cracking as he took a hesitant step toward the bed.

"Don't touch me," Khloe whispered, holding up a single, trembling hand to stop him. She looked at the blood on his cuffs, then up into his hollow eyes. "Where is she, Marcus? Where is our baby?"

Marcus swallowed hard, his throat working convulsively as he tried to find the words. But before he could speak, the hospital’s emergency paging system chimed overhead, cutting through the silence with chilling finality: “Code Blue, NICU Level 3. Code Blue, NICU Level 3.”
