Chapter 2 - The Red Stain

The digital clock on the heart-rate monitor blinked a relentless, mocking green: 4:44 PM. To anyone else, it was just a number, but to Khloe, as she stared up at the sterile white ceiling tiles of the emergency surgical suite, it felt like a countdown to her worst nightmare.

The air smelled intensely of antiseptic, iodine, and the metallic tang of fresh blood. Just minutes ago, the VIP room had transformed into a war zone of flashing lights, rolling gurneys, and shouting medical staff. Through the haze of pain and shock, Khloe could still picture the dark red pool spreading across the marble floor—the unmistakable proof that her body was giving up under the sheer stress of Isabella’s assault.

"Mrs. Vance, I need you to look at me," a sharp, professional voice cut through the ringing in her ears. Dr. Evans, the chief obstetrician, leaned over her, her face hidden behind a surgical mask, but her eyes were grim and tight with professional focus. "Your blood pressure is bottoming out, and we're seeing signs of acute placental abruption. We cannot wait for natural stabilization. We have to take the baby out right now."

"No..." Khloe whispered, her lips dry and cracked. She tried to lift her hand, but a thick IV line strapped to her wrist held her down like a heavy iron chain. "Marcus... where is Marcus?"

"He’s right outside, Mrs. Vance. Security and hospital administration pulled him away to secure the hallway and access the room logs," Dr. Evans said, her tone softening just a fraction, though the urgency in her hands never slowed. A nurse pressed a molded oxygen mask over Khloe's face, the rushing hiss of pressurized air filling her ears and drowning out everything else. "You're in good hands. We're going to put you under general anesthesia, and when you wake up, this will all be over. Count backward from ten for me."

"Ten..." Khloe thought, her eyelids growing impossibly heavy.

Through the blur of the bright overhead surgical lights, her mind flashed backward to the moment before the door had burst open. The cold, heavy pressure of Isabella’s red heel digging directly into her solar plexus. The cruel, mocking smile on Isabella's face as she leaned down and whispered, “Marcus never loved you, Khloe. He was mine before you even learned how to spell Vance, and he’ll be mine the moment this bastard is out of the picture.”

Isabella had known about the pregnancy complications from the start. She had intercepted the medical reports sent to Marcus’s private office, using her position as the Vance family’s senior legal counsel to manipulate every single piece of information feeding into Marcus’s paranoid mind. She had convinced Marcus that Khloe was unstable, that she was fabricating her bed rest to isolate him from his corporate duties, and that the child might not even be his.

And Marcus had almost believed her. If he hadn't walked in at that exact second... if that security camera hadn't been recording every single frame of the betrayal... Khloe shuddered beneath the heavy blankets, her final conscious thought dissolving into the dark, chemical void as the anesthesia pulled her under.

Meanwhile, three floors down in the hospital’s subterranean security control room, the atmosphere was thick enough to cut with a knife.

The room was dark, illuminated only by the harsh, blue glow of a dozen widescreen monitors displaying various corridors, elevators, and VIP suites. In the center of the room sat Chief of Security Vance Miller—no relation to Marcus, but a loyal, twenty-year veteran of the family’s inner circle—and Marcus Vance himself. Marcus stood behind the leather chair, his knuckles pressed so hard against the desktop that his skin was translucent.

"Play it back from the timestamp, Vance," Marcus commanded. His voice wasn't loud; it was the cold, terrifying rumble of an avalanche waiting to break.

The security chief nodded grimly, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. On the central monitor, the high-definition footage of VIP Suite 402 blinked to life.

The timestamp read 4:15 PM.

The video showed Khloe sitting quietly on the edge of the bed, her hands resting gently over her swollen stomach as she looked through a stack of baby clothes. The door clicked open, and Isabella stepped inside, her expression instantly shifting from professional polish to a venomous, predatory glare the second she locked the door behind her.

Marcus watched in absolute, paralyzed horror as Isabella walked slowly toward the bed. He watched the way his wife flinched, shrinking back against the mattress. He watched Isabella lean down, her voice captured crystal-clear by the high-gain directional mic embedded in the camera unit.

“You think you’ve won, don’t you?” Isabella’s recorded voice hissed through the tiny speakers of the control room. “A cute little middle-class nobody stepping into a dynasty. Marcus is just playing house, Khloe. The moment the board meeting happens next week, you’ll be old news.”

“Get away from me, Isabella,” Khloe’s voice answered on the screen, weak but defiant. “Marcus told you never to come near me again.”

“Marcus doesn’t know the half of it,” Isabella sneered on the screen.

Then came the moment that made Marcus’s blood run completely cold. The video showed Isabella lunging forward, not to help, but to violently shove Khloe off the edge of the bed. The sickening thud of Khloe’s body hitting the hard marble floor echoed through the security room like a physical blow. And then, the red heel came down, pressing directly into Khloe’s abdomen with calculated, crushing force.

Marcus stopped breathing. His chest seized up as he watched his own wife—the woman he had sworn to protect, carrying his firstborn child—gasping for air while another woman tried to crush the life out of her.

"Stop," Marcus whispered.

The chief hit the pause button, freezing the image on Isabella’s triumphant, twisted smile just as the door handle began to turn in the background.

"Mr. Vance," the security chief said quietly, standing up from his chair. "The local precinct has already been notified. We have copies of this footage backed up on three separate encrypted servers. No one can touch it, and no amount of corporate defense lawyers can spin this away."

Marcus didn't answer right away. He stared at the paused image of Isabella’s face, tracing the sharp lines of her jawline—the same jawline he had struck upstairs. A strange, dead calm settled over him, replacing the blinding rage with something far more dangerous.

"She has a flight booked to Zurich tonight at midnight," Marcus said quietly, his eyes narrowing as a dark realization dawned on him. "She didn't just come here to threaten Khloe. She came here to finish it before she skipped the country with the trust documents."

"She won't make it out of the parking garage," the chief replied, reaching for his radio.

"No," Marcus said, stopping him with a single, heavy hand on his shoulder. "Let her try to run. Let her get all the way to her car. Because I want her to realize she's trapped before the cuffs go on."
