Chapter 9 - The Ultimatum

The bright morning sun streamed through the high Gothic windows of the Vance estate dining hall, casting long, geometric shadows across the mahogany table. But no one was eating.

At the head of the table sat Eleanor Vance, her posture rigid and her face set in stone. To her right sat Marcus, his eyes bloodshot, staring down at a thick stack of legal papers resting beside his untouched cup of black coffee.

The double doors swung open, and Khloe walked in.

She wasn't wearing her oversized sweater anymore. She had dressed in a sharp, tailored black pantsuit, her hair pulled back into a sleek, severe chignon, and her face painted with a cool, untouchable composure that made Marcus instantly drop his fork. She looked less like a grieving mother and more like an executive ready for war.

In her right hand, she carried a small, metallic flash drive.

Eleanor raised an eyebrow, a flicker of uneasy surprise crossing her aristocratic features. "Khloe. I wasn't aware you were well enough to join us downstairs. We were just discussing the preliminary terms of your departure."

Khloe didn't answer right away. She walked slowly to the end of the table opposite Eleanor, pulled out the high-backed leather chair, and sat down with deliberate, agonizing slowness. She placed the metal drive squarely in the center of the polished wood, right between Eleanor's coffee cup and Marcus's legal papers.

"Departure?" Khloe asked, her voice carrying a calm, lethal edge that sent a shiver down Marcus’s spine. "That’s funny, Eleanor. Because I wasn't planning on going anywhere."

Marcus stood up abruptly, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. "Khloe, please. Sit down. Let's talk about this privately. Mother and I—"

"Sit down, Marcus," Khloe interrupted, her voice dropping into a register so cold and authoritative that Marcus actually froze and slowly lowered himself back into his seat.

Khloe leaned forward, resting her forearms on the table, her dark eyes locking directly onto Eleanor’s. "You wanted me out of this house, Eleanor. You wanted a quiet, legal separation with a generous NDA settlement to protect the Vance family name and the upcoming board vote. You thought I was broken. You thought I would take the payout, crawl back to my middle-class life, and keep my mouth shut."

Eleanor’s jaw tightened, but she didn't flinch. "And you aren't? Khloe, let’s be entirely realistic. You have no legal standing, no family backing, and no power within this corporation. Fighting us is professional suicide."

"Is it?" Khloe asked softly. She reached out and tapped the metal flash drive with her index finger. "Because this little piece of hardware contains fifty-two gigabytes of encrypted evidence detailing the New Jersey chemical dumping scandal, the falsified FDA clinical trials for Vance Pharma’s Alzheimer’s drug, and the secret Swiss bank accounts Marcus used to embezzle three million dollars from the family trust last quarter."

The color drained entirely from Eleanor’s face. For the first time since Marcus had known her, the formidable matriarch looked genuinely, terrifyingly panicked.

Marcus stared at the drive, his chest seizing up. "How... how do you have that? Those files were wiped from the central servers!"

"Let’s just say I have very reliable friends who are tired of being treated like disposable pawns by the Vance family," Khloe said, a grim, humorless smile touching the corners of her lips. She stood up slowly, her gaze sweeping over both of them with absolute contempt. "Here are my terms, and you will listen very carefully because I am only going to say this once."

Eleanor gripped the edges of her chair, her knuckles turning bone-white. "Name them."

"First," Khloe said, holding up one finger, "Marcus is going to sign over fifty percent of his personal voting shares and corporate assets directly to me, effective immediately. Second, the board is going to vote to remove Eleanor from her position as chairwoman, replacing her with an independent trustee of my choosing. And third..." Khloe paused, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper that echoed off the high walls, "Isabella Sterling is going to rot in federal prison for the rest of her natural life, and Marcus and I are going to ensure that every single co-conspirator who helped her cover up my daughter's murder joins her behind bars."

Marcus looked up at her, his eyes shining with a mixture of profound shock and a bizarre, twisted kind of respect. "Khloe... you can't be serious. If you do this, you're declaring war on the entire pharmaceutical industry."

May you like

"War?" Khloe replied, turning toward the door with her head held high. "Marcus, your family declared war the day you let a monster into my hospital room. I’m just finishing it."
