Chapter 14 - Footsteps in the Hall

The grandfather clock in the downstairs hallway chimed softly, tolling midnight with deep, resonant gongs that echoed through the silent mansion.

Upstairs in the nursery suite, the room was dimly lit by a soft amber nightlight shaped like a sleeping bear. Little Noah lay fast asleep in his crib, his tiny chest rising and falling in a slow, peaceful rhythm.

Mia sat in the rocking chair beside the crib, a thick medical reference book open across her lap, though her eyes were heavy with fatigue. She had spent the entire evening double-checking security logs, ensuring every window sensor, biometric lock, and panic room mechanism was fully functional following Daniel's grim warning earlier that afternoon.

A sudden, faint sound broke the quiet hum of the central heating.

Click.

It wasn't the sound of the heavy oak door opening. It was the distinct, metallic sound of the hallway security keypad registering an internal administrative override code.

Mia froze. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.

She stood up slowly from the rocking chair, making sure not to creak the wooden floorboards, and crept toward the nursery door. She peered through the narrow, glass-paneled peephole into the dark hallway outside.

The hallway was pitch black, illuminated only by the faint green glow of the exit signs.

For a few seconds, nothing moved. Then, a tall, dark silhouette stepped silently out of the shadows near the grand staircase, moving with absolute, predatory stealth toward the master suite.

It wasn't a guard. It wasn't local law enforcement. And it certainly wasn't Daniel, who was still locked away in the basement archive reviewing his father's old journals.

Mia's breath hitched. She reached out instinctively, her fingers brushing against the emergency panic button mounted beside the doorframe.

Before her thumb could depress the switch, a heavy hand clamped firmly over her mouth from behind, cutting off her gasp, while a cold, steel blade pressed lightly against the sensitive skin of her throat.

"Don't make a sound," a deep, gravelly voice whispered directly into her ear, sending a paralyzing wave of pure terror straight down her spine. "Unless you want the boy to wake up and watch you die."
