Chapter 5 - The Masterstroke

The supercar skidded across the wet shoulder of the highway, plunging off the asphalt and crashing heavily through a chain-link perimeter fence before grinding to a halt in a muddy ditch. Steam hissed from under the crumpled hood, mixing with the heavy rain pouring down from the dark sky.
Inside the cabin, the emergency airbags hung limply like deflated balloons. Daniel groaned, shaking his head to clear the sudden, sharp wave of dizziness washing over him. A thin trickle of warm blood ran down his forehead from a minor gash above his left eyebrow, stinging his eye.
Before he could even unbuckle his safety harness, the heavy doors of the flanking SUVs slammed shut outside. Heavy combat boots splashed through the deep mud, rushing toward his vehicle.
"Out of the car! Hands on the steering wheel where we can see them!" a harsh, electronically distorted voice barked from the darkness outside.
Daniel didn't move. His hand slid slowly down toward the concealed compartment beneath the center console where he kept his licensed Smith & Wesson M&P pistol. If they wanted a fight, they were going to get one.
Before his fingers could graze the cold steel of the grip, the driver-side window—already weakened by the previous strike—shattered completely inward with a deafening crash of breaking glass. Massive, gloved hands reached inside, grabbing Daniel by the collar of his shirt and yanking him violently out of the wreckage into the freezing rain and mud.
Daniel swung a vicious right hook that caught his attacker square in the jaw, sending the man staggering backward into the mud. But before he could land a second blow, two more men tackled him from behind, pinning his arms behind his back and forcing him down onto his knees in the soaking dirt.
"Hold him!" a cold, crisp voice commanded from the shadows.
The heavy boots stepped closer, stopping right in front of Daniel's face. A pair of impeccably polished leather shoes—completely spotless despite the mud—came into view.
Daniel forced his head up, blinking the rain and blood out of his eyes.
Standing before him, holding a sleek black umbrella that shielded him from the downpour, was a tall, silver-haired man in a bespoke tailored Italian suit. His face bore sharp, aristocratic features, and his pale blue eyes held a chilling, predatory amusement.
"Victor Thorne," Daniel spat, the name dripping with absolute venom as he glared up at his lifelong rival.
"Hello, Daniel," Victor said smoothly, offering a polite, mocking smile as he adjusted his cuffs. "You always were a bit too impatient for your own good. Rushing out into the middle of the night just to chase a ghost."
A sleek black Mercedes sedan pulled up slowly behind the SUVs, its headlights cutting through the rain. The rear door clicked open, and a pair of high heels stepped gracefully onto the wet asphalt.
Sophia Bennett stepped out from the car.
She was no longer wearing the terrified or defensive expression she had worn back in the mansion foyer. Instead, she looked like an absolute queen. The sapphire-blue gown she wore rustled softly in the wind as she walked over to stand beside Victor Thorne, slipping her arm smoothly through the older man's arm with practiced familiarity.
Daniel stared at her, the final, horrifying realization finally clicking into place.
"You..." Daniel breathed, his voice laced with absolute disgust. "You were never working for him. You were working with him from the very beginning. You're not his agent... you're his daughter."
Sophia smiled, a slow, radiant grin that reached her eyes for the very first time. She reached into her pocket, pulled out the stolen master cryptographic hardware token, and tossed it casually from hand to hand before slipping it into Victor's pocket.
"Took you long enough to figure it out, didn't it, Daniel?" Sophia laughed lightly, stepping closer to look down at the man who had thought he owned her heart and her future. "You really thought a billionaire like you was the smartest person in any room, didn't you? You thought I was just another desperate girl you could toy with and discard whenever it suited your corporate strategy."
"You put my son in danger," Daniel snarled, lunging forward despite the men holding him down, his muscles straining against their grip. "If you or this pathetic excuse for a businessman ever come within a mile of Noah—"
"Noah is perfectly safe," Victor interrupted, his voice dropping its polite veneer and turning ice-cold. "For now. Because right now, your precious son is the only thing standing between you and absolute financial ruin. And as of eight o'clock this morning, when the board officially ratifies the emergency asset transfer... Bennett Enterprises belongs to Horizon Global Logistics."
Sophia leaned down slightly, her face inches from Daniel's, her eyes gleaming with cold triumph as she delivered her final whisper.
