Chapter 4 - The Highway Ambush

The rain came down in sheets, blurring the amber highway lights into long, smeared streaks of yellow and red across the windshield of Daniel's supercar. The high-performance tires gripped the slick asphalt with a desperate whine as he pushed the speedometer well past the hundred-and-thirty-mile-per-hour mark, cutting aggressively between massive freight trucks like a missile in the dark.
His knuckles were fused to the steering wheel, his eyes fixed on the empty stretch of highway stretching out toward the private aviation park ten miles ahead.
According to Marcus's live GPS tracking ping from the stolen cryptographic token, Sophia's vehicle was less than three minutes away from the airstrip hangers. If she managed to board that Gulfstream jet and cross international airspace before the FAA lockdown order fully processed, Bennett Enterprises would face a hostile corporate takeover before the sun even crested the horizon. Years of empire-building, millions of dollars in capital assets, and his family's entire legacy would be signed away with a few strokes of a digital pen.
Suddenly, the dashboard navigation screen flickered violently, cutting from the live satellite map to a flashing red warning banner:
SYSTEM ALERT: GPS SIGNAL LOST.
Daniel slammed on the brakes slightly, his eyes darting to the rearview mirror.
Directly behind him, out of the blinding curtain of rain and spray, two massive, unmarked black SUVs materialized without headlights, accelerating at a terrifying speed to close the gap. Before Daniel could even shift down to execute an evasive maneuver, the lead SUV swerved violently across the wet lane, slamming its heavy reinforced front bumper directly into the rear quarter-panel of his supercar.
The impact sent a violent shockwave through the chassis, spinning the lightweight vehicle sideways across three lanes of slick highway.
"Damn it!" Daniel roared, fighting the steering wheel with brute strength, counter-steering into the skid just in time to avoid slamming head-on into a concrete median barrier.
The supercar fishtailed wildly before regaining traction, its engine screaming as Daniel slammed his foot back onto the gas. But the two SUVs weren't letting go. They flanked him immediately—one pressing hard against his driver's side door, trying to force him off the road into the steep, rocky embankment, while the other dropped back to block any attempt at a reverse maneuver.
This wasn't a random highway collision. This was a professional hit squad.
Daniel’s phone buzzed violently on the passenger seat, the screen lighting up with Marcus’s incoming call. He snatched it up with one hand while violently wrenching the steering wheel away from the SUV trying to crush his door.
"Marcus! Talk to me!" Daniel shouted over the deafening roar of the rain and grinding metal.
"Boss, we have a code red!" Marcus yelled, his voice panicked. "The FAA override didn't go through! Someone high up in the federal transport agency just overrode our clearance block with a presidential-tier security waiver. Sophia's jet just taxied onto the active runway!"
"They've got backup on the ground!" Daniel yelled back, ducking his head as a heavy object—likely a heavy iron chain or a crowbar—banged loudly against the passenger-side window from the flanking SUV, shattering the outer layer of bullet-resistant glass into a spiderweb of cracks. "I'm being intercepted on Route 9! Send tactical back-up immediately!"
"We're ten minutes out, Daniel! You need to get off that road—"
The call cut off abruptly with a loud, piercing screech of static as a heavy electromagnetic pulse device deployed from the lead SUV short-circuited the car's internal electronics.
The dashboard went completely dark. The engine sputtered, coughed, and died.

With no power steering and no brakes, Daniel was gliding helplessly forward at eighty miles per hour down a dark, rain-slicked highway, trapped between two armored vehicles closing in for the kill.
