Chapter 9 - The Mansion Siege

Back at the Bennett estate, the heavy mahogany doors of the grand foyer banged open once more.
Sophia stood by the base of the grand staircase, sipping a cup of freshly brewed black coffee, listening to the soft, rhythmic patter of rain against the tall stained-glass windows. The house was finally hers. The guards she had brought with her were stationed at every perimeter exit, securing the perimeter against any outside interference.
Suddenly, the encrypted intercom system mounted on the wall crackled to life.
Instead of static, a harsh, distorted computer voice—or rather, a frantic, panicked security alert—broadcasted through the entire mansion:
CRITICAL WARNING. ALL HORIZON ACCOUNTS FROZEN. FEDERAL WARRANTS ISSUED FOR ASSET SEIZURE. REPEAT—
Sophia's coffee cup slipped from her fingers, shattering against the marble floor in a loud, brown splatter of porcelain and liquid.
Her head snapped toward the wall panel. Her face, usually a mask of ice-cold composure, suddenly went completely pale. She grabbed her smartphone from her pocket and dialed Victor’s private direct line.
It rang once. Twice. Three times.
Then a gruff, unfamiliar voice answered on the other end: "Federal Bureau of Investigation. Step away from the phone, or—"
Sophia slammed her finger down on the screen, cutting the call dead. Her hands began to tremble violently. She looked up toward the nursery wing upstairs, her mind racing with a terrifying realization: Victor hadn't just underestimated Daniel.
Victor had been played by her, but Daniel had anticipated the double-cross before she even pulled the trigger.
"Looking for someone?" a deep, calm voice echoed from the shadows of the arched entryway.
Sophia spun around sharply.
Standing in the doorway, completely unbothered by the rain, his suit slightly wrinkled but his eyes burning with absolute fury, was Daniel Bennett.
He wasn't in a holding cell. He hadn't been defeated at all.
Behind him, three black tactical vehicles bearing federal law enforcement insignia blocked the main driveway, their red and blue lights flashing silently against the wet stone walls of the mansion.
Sophia took a frantic step backward, her back hitting the cold marble pillar at the base of the grand staircase. For the first time since the night began, her mask completely shattered.
"How... how did you get out?" she breathed, her voice trembling. "The holding facility... Victor had jurisdiction—"
"Victor is currently being fitted for federal handcuffs," Daniel said, walking slowly toward her, his footsteps echoing like a countdown in the quiet foyer. "And your little offshore shell corporation in the Caymans? It's currently being liquidated by the Department of Justice, along with every penny your father tried to hide."
Sophia’s breath came in ragged gasps. She looked around desperately for an exit, but the guards who had escorted her into the house were already pinned against the courtyard wall outside by federal agents.
"You think you've won," Sophia hissed, her voice rising to a frantic, hysterical pitch as she pulled a small, silver digital flash drive out of her pocket—the final leverage she had kept hidden. "I still have the biometric access codes to Noah's trust fund! If I don't walk out of here right now, I'll wipe every cent of his inheritance into an untraceable void!"
Daniel didn't even slow his pace. He walked right up to her, towering over her by a full head, his expression completely devoid of mercy.
"You won't touch my son," Daniel said quietly.
Before Sophia could raise her hand to throw the drive or make a run for the side door, a soft click echoed from the top of the grand staircase.
Mia stood at the landing, holding little Noah securely in her arms. The baby was smiling, looking down at his father with wide, innocent eyes.
Daniel glanced up at his son for a fraction of a second, a wave of pure relief washing over his features, before looking back down at the trapped woman trembling before him.
"Take her away," Daniel commanded.
Two federal agents stepped through the open doors, grabbed Sophia firmly by both arms, and slapped heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.
As they dragged her screaming toward the waiting squad cars in the pouring rain, Sophia turned her head one last time, her eyes locking onto Daniel with a look of pure, unadulterated venom.
"This isn't over, Daniel!" she shrieked over the wailing sirens. "You haven't seen the last of me!"

The heavy oak doors closed once more.
