Chapter 11 - The Glass Corridor Ambush

The shrieking of the emergency alarms tore through the sixth floor of Lakeview University Medical Center, blending with the hollow, rhythmic echo of heavy combat boots pounding against the linoleum. Smoke from a breached thermal smoke grenade drifted lazily beneath the flashing red strobe lights, turning the sterile hospital corridor into a war zone of shadows and blinding crimson glares.

Luca Mancini didn't flinch as a third high-powered round shattered the remaining shards of glass in Room 412’s window frame, sending a fine dust of safety glass raining down across the floor. His broad shoulders remained arched like a fortress over the trembling frame of seventeen-year-old Elena Vasquez, who clutched the fabric of his charcoal overcoat as if it were the only solid object left in a collapsing world.

"Stay down, Elena. Do not lift your head," Luca commanded, his voice unnervingly calm amid the chaos, carrying the absolute authority of a man who had survived a dozen executions and lived to bury his executioners.

"They're shooting at us—who are they?!" Elena gasped, her breath coming in shallow, terrified hitches against his chest. The fresh surgical stitches across her abdomen pulled with a sharp, burning agony, but the adrenaline singing through her veins drowned out the pain. "Why are they here?"

"Because they made the mistake of thinking I was vulnerable," Luca said coldly.

Outside the room, the hallway erupted into a furious exchange of gunfire. Marco Vitali’s deep, gravelly voice barked tactical orders over the din.

"Suppressing fire down the east wing! Watch the stairwell access—they’re pushing a two-man assault team with suppressed submachine guns!"

"Got movement by the linen closet!" another security operative shouted back, followed by the deafening, thunderous crack-crack-crack of returned fire. The walls shuddered as heavy rounds punched through drywall, chewing up the hospital’s expensive interior panels.

Luca slowly shifted his weight, keeping his body shielding Elena’s while his right hand slipped smoothly beneath his left armpit, drawing the matte-black Sig Sauer pistol from its concealed leather shoulder holster. The weapon felt reassuringly heavy and familiar in his grip. He checked the magazine slide with a practiced click.

"Look at me, Elena," Luca ordered softly, his piercing grey-blue eyes locking onto her wide, dark ones.

Elena swallowed hard, blinking away the tears stinging her lashes. Up close, under the flashing red strobe light, she finally noticed the striking resemblance—the sharp architecture of the jawline, the intense shape of the eyes, and the faint, identical crescent-shaped scar tucked beneath the skin of their left temples. She didn't know the genetic truth yet, but her blood was already whispering a terrifying recognition.

"You're safe," Luca told her, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a ferocious, primal promise. "I built an empire out of blood and steel to ensure nobody would ever touch what belongs to me. And you belong to me, Elena. Do you understand?"

Before she could process the staggering weight of his words, the heavy wooden door of Room 412 was kicked violently inward.

A masked operative dressed in tactical black armor stepped across the threshold, a suppressed carbine raised and tracking directly toward the bed.

Luca didn't hesitate. From a kneeling position beside the mattress, he fired twice.

The two muffled shots sounded like heavy hammers striking wood. The operative jerked backward violently, the carbine slipping from his hands as he crashed hard against the doorframe and slid down into a dark heap on the floor.

A second gunman appeared behind him, shouting a curse in Italian, but before he could raise his weapon, Marco Vitali appeared in the doorway behind him, his pistol muzzle pressed directly against the man's neck.

Click.

"Drop it, or I blow your spine through your teeth," Marco growled.

The second gunman froze, slowly opening his hands and letting his weapon clatter against the linoleum tile.

Marco kicked the rifle away, stepped over the body of the first operative, and looked down into the room. "Area secured, Boss. The rest of the extraction team cleared the stairwell. Our transport vehicles are idling in the underground ambulance bay."

Luca lowered his pistol, sliding it smoothly back into its holster. He turned his attention back to Elena, who was staring at the fallen gunman near the door with wide, horrified eyes.

"Can you stand?" Luca asked, his voice returning to that steady, unyielding calm.

"I... I think so," Elena whispered, though her legs felt like water.

Without waiting for her to argue, Luca scooped her up effortlessly into his arms, bridal-style. She gasped, instinctively wrapping her arms around his neck for balance as the warmth of his heavy coat enveloped her. He didn't look back at the carnage on the floor as he carried her out of the room, stepping past the smoking cartridge casings and out into a hallway now swarming with loyal Blackwood enforcers.
