Chapter 13 - The Sanctuary of the Obsidian Lake

The Blackwood-Mancini estate sat on a jagged, wind-swept promontory overlooking the freezing, grey expanse of Lake Michigan. Surrounded by three miles of reinforced concrete walls, iron-spiked wrought-iron fencing, and state-of-the-art thermal surveillance towers, the sprawling stone mansion looked less like a home and more like a medieval fortress adapted for the digital age.

When the armored convoy rolled through the massive wrought-iron gates, the heavy snow parted beneath the reinforced tires like seafoam.

The middle Escalade pulled under the grand portico, and within seconds, Marco Vitali was opening the door. Luca stepped out into the freezing lake wind, then reached back in, scooping Elena into his arms once more despite her quiet, exhausted protests.

"I can walk," she muttered, her face flushing crimson with embarrassment despite her exhaustion and the dull ache in her abdomen.

"You've just undergone emergency surgery to repair a torn splenic artery less than twenty-four hours ago," Luca replied flatly, striding up the granite steps toward the double oak doors. "Walking across a freezing courtyard is not an option."

The heavy doors swung open automatically, revealing a cavernous grand foyer of dark mahogany, imported Italian marble, and soaring vaulted ceilings. A massive crystal chandelier cast a warm, golden glow over a curving double staircase that dominated the center of the hall. Guards in immaculate tactical suits stood at attention near every archway, their presence silent and absolute.

Luca carried her up the grand staircase, bypassing the main guest quarters on the second floor and continuing up to the third—the private residential wing that belonged exclusively to the master of the house.

He kicked open a door at the end of the hallway, revealing a suite that was a masterclass in minimalist luxury: charcoal-grey velvet walls, a king-sized platform bed draped in black silk, a massive floor-to-ceiling glass wall looking out over the churning grey waters of Lake Michigan, and a roaring stone fireplace casting dancing amber shadows across the room.

He gently laid her down against the soft, yielding mattress, adjusting the pillows so she was propped up comfortably.

"A private medical staff will be up in five minutes to check your stitches and monitor your IV," Luca instructed, standing at the foot of the bed and shrugging off his heavy wool overcoat, revealing the crisp, tailored suit beneath. "There is food coming up. Eat what they bring you. You need protein to rebuild your red blood cells."

Elena pulled the silk duvet up around her shoulders, her dark eyes darting around the palatial, terrifyingly luxurious room before locking back onto him. "You’re treating me like a prisoner in a very expensive cage."

"If you were a prisoner, the doors would be locked from the outside," Luca pointed out calmly, walking over to a mahogany sideboard and pouring two fingers of neat amber scotch into a crystal tumbler. He didn't drink it; he just held it, swirling the liquid. "These doors are unlocked. You are free to walk out anytime you choose. But if you step past those gates outside without an armed security detail, the Moretti family will put a bullet through your skull before you reach the end of the driveway. Choose your freedom carefully, Elena."

The brutal honesty of his words hung in the air like a physical blow. Elena swallowed hard, looking away toward the roaring fireplace. "Why are you doing this? Why protect me? People like you... you don't do things out of the goodness of your heart."

"You're right," Luca said, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly rasp as he set the glass down untouched. "I don't have a heart. Not anymore. But I have a debt. And as of last night in that hospital, my blood is running through your veins."

Before Elena could process the cryptic weight of that statement, a soft knock sounded at the door, and a middle-aged woman in a neat grey dress entered carrying a tray of warm broth and medical supplies.

Luca turned toward the door, pausing just before he stepped out into the hallway.

"Rest, Elena," he commanded quietly. "By tomorrow morning, the genetic tests will be back from the independent lab in Lincoln Park. And once you see the report with your own eyes, you'll finally understand why no one in this city will ever lay a hand on you again."
