Chapter 12 - The Descent into the Catacombs

The subterranean parking level of Lakeview University Medical Center smelled of burnt rubber, exhaust fumes, and melting snow. A convoy of three matte-black armored Cadillac Escalades idled near the ambulance bays, their heavy diesel engines rumbling with a low, menacing purr that vibrated through the concrete floor.
Marco Vitali moved ahead of the group, sweeping his tactical flashlight across the shadows while four armed operatives formed a tight perimeter around Luca and Elena.
Luca carefully placed Elena into the leather-lined interior of the middle vehicle, settling her gently against the heated seats before pulling a heavy wool blanket over her trembling legs.
"Keep the IV line secured," Luca instructed a discreet field medic who had accompanied them down the service elevator. "If her blood pressure drops another ten points, administer the saline booster immediately."
"Yes, Mr. Mancini," the medic replied, quickly securing the medical bag.
Luca closed the heavy armored door, cutting off the chill of the subterranean garage, and slid into the seat directly beside her. The heavy vehicle shifted into gear, the tires gripping the slick concrete as the convoy surged forward, smashing through the security gate and disappearing into the gray, snow-choked tunnels of the Chicago expressway loop.
Elena stared out the bulletproof window as the concrete pillars whipped past in a dark blur. Her mind was spinning so fast she felt as though she might shatter into a thousand pieces.
"Where are we going?" she asked, her voice barely audible over the hum of the engine. "The police... shouldn't we be going to a police station? People just tried to kill us in a hospital!"
"The police in this city answer to the city council, and the city council answers to the highest bidder—which, until very recently, included the Moretti family," Luca replied coldly, staring straight ahead as he adjusted the cuffs of his white dress shirt. "A police station is just a waiting room for an assassination. You are coming with me to the estate on the lake."
Elena turned her head sharply to look at him, her dark eyes flashing with a sudden spark of defensive defiance that she must have inherited from the same stubborn bloodline. "I don't even know you! You gave me your blood yesterday, and now you're kidnapping me from a hospital—"
"I am not kidnapping you, Elena," Luca interrupted, turning his gaze toward her. The intensity in his dark, grey-blue eyes was so absolute it physically silenced her. "I am claiming you."
"Claiming me?" A bitter, disbelieving laugh escaped her lips. "What is this, some kind of medieval mafia fairy tale? I have a life! I have a foster family, I have school, I have a job at the bookstore—"
"You had all of those things yesterday," Luca said quietly, his voice dropping into a register that carried the crushing weight of an inescapable truth. "Last night, a semi-truck tried to crush you on I-290. This morning, a Moretti hit squad put two sniper rounds through your hospital window. The life you thought you had ended the moment your car left the highway."
Elena swallowed hard, her throat tightening painfully. She wanted to scream at him, to tell him he was insane, to demand that he let her out of this rolling fortress. But deep down, beneath the terror and the confusion, a cold, miserable logic was screaming that he was right. She had no parents. She had no protection. If those men in the hospital had wanted her dead, she would already be a corpse on a stainless-steel table if this terrifying stranger hadn't stood between her and the bullets.
"Why?" she whispered, her voice cracking. Tears finally broke over her lower lashes, tracking hot and fast down her pale cheeks. "Why me? I'm just a seventeen-year-old kid from a foster home. Why do these men want me dead? What do I have to do with any of this?"
Luca looked at her for a long, agonizing moment. The hardened crime lord—the man who had executed traitors without blinking and ruled the Chicago docks with an iron fist—felt a strange, unfamiliar ache tear through his chest. He reached out, his large, calloused thumb gently wiping a tear from her cheek. The skin beneath her eye brushed against his thumb, grazing the small, crescent-shaped scar she had carried since infancy.

"You have my blood, Elena," Luca said softly, his voice thick with a emotion he hadn't felt in twelve years. "And in my world, that makes you the most dangerous target in the city. But it also makes you untouchable to anyone foolish enough to try."
