Chapter 14 - The Ghosts of the Past

Midnight on Lake Michigan brought a howling gale that slammed sheets of frozen spray against the floor-to-ceiling glass of the third-floor master suite. Inside, the room was warm, bathed in the orange glow of the stone fireplace.
Elena had fallen into a deep, medicated sleep hours ago, her breathing finally evening out as the powerful antibiotics and pain management drips did their work.
Down in the subterranean security command center of the estate, Luca Mancini sat in a high-backed leather chair before a wall of glowing monitors displaying live thermal feeds of the perimeter gates, the surrounding forest, and the private shoreline.
Marco Vitali stood beside the desk, sliding a thick manila envelope across the polished obsidian surface.
"The courier just delivered the expedited genetics package from the Lincoln Park lab," Marco said quietly, his face betraying a rare flicker of tension. "Independent testing. Three separate technicians, cross-referenced against your tissue sample from the safehouse armory."
Luca didn't touch the envelope immediately. He reached into his vest pocket, pulled out a heavy gold lighter, flipped it open, closed it, and flipped it open again. The metallic click-clink echoed softly in the subterranean quiet.
"And?" Luca asked, his voice dangerously level.
"99.999% paternal match," Marco said, reading the summary page without opening the folder. "Elena Vasquez is your biological daughter, Luca. Conceived fourteen years ago during the winter Clara vanished from the city."
Luca stopped playing with the lighter. The metal flame guard snapped shut with a definitive click.
For twelve years, he had lived with the agonizing certainty that his body had betrayed him—that the poisoning he suffered during the Sicilian turf war had permanently sterilized him, cutting off any possibility of a future, a legacy, or a family. He had accepted it as his penance for a life soaked in blood.
And now, the universe had played the most cruel, beautiful joke imaginable.
"Clara knew," Luca whispered, his voice barely audible over the hum of the computer servers. "She knew she was pregnant when she walked away."
"She didn't just walk away, Boss," Marco said carefully, pulling a second, older document from the manila envelope. "According to the supplementary background check my intelligence team pulled from old municipal records tonight... Clara didn't leave you to escape your world. She left because she found out who tried to poison you in Palermo."
Luca’s head snapped up, his dark eyes locking onto his lieutenant with lethal intensity. "What did you say?"
"The man who engineered the 2012 hit wasn't just an anonymous Sicilian capo," Marco said steadily, laying a faded photograph on the desk next to the DNA report. It showed a younger, sharp-featured man with cold eyes standing outside a private club in Rome—a man Luca recognized instantly. "It was Matteo Moretti. The patriarch of the family currently trying to take over our docks."
The temperature in the command center seemed to drop forty degrees in a single second. The air grew so thick and heavy it felt impossible to breathe.
"Matteo," Luca murmured, his voice turning into a low, murderous growl that rattled the coffee mug on the desk.
"Clara discovered the connection through her uncle, who worked in diplomatic shipping," Marco continued, his voice grim. "Matteo threatened to eliminate her and the unborn child if she didn't disappear and never tell you the truth. She spent fourteen years hiding in the foster system shadows of Chicago, raising your daughter in absolute secrecy, until a truck on I-290 nearly wiped her out last night."
Luca stood up so violently his chair crashed backward against the concrete wall, hitting it with a loud thud. The fury radiating from him was palpable, a dark, suffocating wave of pure, unadulterated rage that could have leveled a building.
For fourteen years, Matteo Moretti had waged a silent, shadow war against him, all while knowing that Luca’s supposed sterility was a lie engineered by his own hands—and that somewhere out there, a Mancini heir was breathing.
"Get the tactical squad ready," Luca commanded, his voice shaking with a terrifying, controlled lethality.
"Boss, what are you planning?" Marco asked, stepping forward.
May you like
"We're not waiting for them to make a move on the estate," Luca said, pulling his leather gloves over his hands, his eyes burning with the cold fire of an executioner. "We're going to the Moretti North Side compound. Tonight."
