Chapter 8 - The Price of Protection

The sun rose slowly over Chicago, casting a blinding, flat white glare across the snow-drifted streets. The blizzard had finally burned itself out, leaving the city paralyzed beneath three feet of fresh powder and black ice.
Inside Room 412, the rhythmic beep of the heart monitor was the only sound breaking the heavy silence.
Elena Vasquez stirred. Her eyelids fluttered, heavy with residual anesthesia and exhaustion, before she managed to crack them open. The harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital room made her squint, her dry throat aching as she tried to swallow.
"Th... water," she whispered, her voice a dry rasp.
A glass of ice water appeared instantly at her bedside. A large, warm hand—calloused and steady—gently slid behind her shoulders, lifting her head just enough for her to sip through a bendable straw.
Elena blinked away the fog in her vision and looked up.
Standing beside her bed was a tall, imposing man in a charcoal overcoat, his dark hair silvering at the temples, his piercing eyes watching her with an intensity that made her breath catch. He didn't look like a doctor, nor a social worker. He looked like something out of a dark painting—dangerous, elegant, and completely out of place in a charity ward.
"Slowly," Luca instructed, his voice deep and surprisingly gentle. "Don't rush it."
Elena drank greedily, the cool water soothing her raw throat. She sank back against the pillows, her chest aching where the surgeons had operated. "Who... who are you? Where is Dr. Reyes?"
"Dr. Reyes is asleep," Luca said, stepping back slightly so she wouldn't feel cornered, though his eyes never left her face. "I'm Luca."
"Luca," she repeated, tasting the name. She frowned, trying to piece together the shattered timeline of the night before. "I was on I-290. The truck... I remember the headlights, the metal crunching... and then nothing. Am I... am I dead?"
"No," Luca said quietly. "You're very much alive. And you’re going to stay that way."
Before Elena could ask any more questions, the door swung open, and Marco Vitali stepped into the room, holding a secure tablet. Marco stopped short when he saw Elena awake, but his eyes quickly shifted to Luca, giving a single, subtle nod.
The independent genetic test results were in.
Luca felt a strange, chilling calm wash over him. The numbers didn't lie. The DNA markers matched with a 99.999% certainty. The girl lying in this hospital bed—this quiet, orphaned teenager who had almost died on a snowy highway—was his flesh and blood.
And in the brutal, violent underworld of Chicago, a mafia boss finding out he has a living heir is not a blessing.
It’s a declaration of war.
"What is it?" Elena asked, noticing the shift in the room's atmosphere, her young eyes darting between the two formidable men. "Is something wrong? Do I owe money for the hospital stay? I don't have insurance, I can work it off at the bookstore—"

"You don't owe anyone a single cent, Elena," Luca interrupted, his voice cutting through her anxious rambling with absolute, unyielding finality. He stepped closer to the bed, resting his hand on the metal guardrail. "Listen to me very carefully. Starting today, your life as you know it is over."
