Chapter 6 - The Breach of the Inner Sanctum

The reinforced steel door of the panic room hummed with a low, vibrating resonance as heavy concussive blasts echoed from the upper levels of the Westchester estate. Through the primary surveillance monitor on the wall, the hallway outside looked like a war zone. Plaster dust snowed down from the ceiling, turning the air hazy and gray, while the acrid smell of cordite and burnt gunpowder drifted faintly through the ventilation intake system.
On the live tactical feed, Dominic was a blur of calculated motion. He pivoted around the corner of the grand staircase, his Sig Sauer spitting fire twice before dropping a masked operative who had managed to breach the second-floor landing. Beside him, Enzo laid down suppressive fire with a suppressed carbine, driving the remaining attackers back toward the sweeping marble foyer.
“They’re using thermal breaching charges on the west corridor doors!” Enzo shouted over the encrypted tactical comms channel, his voice tight with strain. “Boss, we’ve got at least ten more coming up through the conservatory!”
“Fall back to the secondary choke point at the library entrance,” Dominic ordered, his breathing steady despite the chaos. “Do not let them get within fifty yards of the east wing access corridor.”
Inside the bunker, I watched the monitor with my heart hammering violently against my ribs. The orthopedic binder wrapped around my chest strained with every shallow breath. Beside me, Isabella sat gripping the arms of her chair so hard her knuckles were stark white, her lips moving in silent, frantic prayer as she clutched her silver rosary.
“He’s going to be fine, Elena,” Isabella whispered, though her voice trembled betrayingly as she glanced at me. “Dominic has survived worse than this. He built this empire from the ashes of our family’s ruin. He won’t let them take us.”
“I know,” I replied, though a cold knot of dread tightened in my stomach.
On the screen, a fresh squad of Victor Costa’s mercenaries surged up the stairs, ignoring the bodies of their fallen comrades. Leading them was a massive, scarred enforcer wielding a Remington shotgun. He pumped the slide with brutal efficiency and blasted the decorative wooden molding off the library double doors, showering the hallway with splinters.
Dominic didn't flinch. He waited until the enforcer stepped fully into the open line of sight, took a half-step forward, and fired three rapid shots into the man's tactical vest. The enforcer staggered backward, tumbling down the flight of marble stairs in a lifeless heap.
But the sheer volume of incoming attackers was overwhelming. For every man Dominic and Enzo dropped, two more pushed forward from the shadows of the ground-floor corridors.
Suddenly, the screen flickered violently. A localized EMP device or a high-voltage surge went through the manor's electrical grid, throwing the secondary cameras into heavy static.
