Chapter 6 - The Confession in the Dark

The harsh metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the sprawling medical suite as Enzo hauled the intruder up by his tactical vest, dragging him backward out of the room toward the subterranean security holding cells. The heavy oak door slammed shut behind them, leaving Dominic and me alone in the tense, suffocating quiet of the bedroom.

Dominic stood near the edge of the bed, his chest heaving with adrenaline. The Glock was still gripped tightly in his right hand, his knuckles white against the polymer frame. He didn't look at me right away; his dark eyes were fixed on the deep gash the assassin’s knife had carved into the mattress—barely inches from where my legs lay under the white duvet.

“Are you hurt?” Dominic finally asked, his voice rough and strained as he forced his gaze up to meet mine.

“No,” I whispered, my voice shaking uncontrollably as the shock finally began to set in, replacing the adrenaline with a freezing tremor that racked my entire body. “I… I missed him with the pitcher, but I threw him off balance. Dominic, what did he mean? What did he say about my father?”

Dominic lowered the gun, setting it down on the bedside table with a dull thud before walking over and sitting down on the edge of the mattress. He reached out, his warm hands gently taking my trembling fingers, chafing them to restore circulation.

“Don’t listen to him, Clara,” Dominic said, though his own face was dangerously pale. “Men like Costa hire professional provocateurs. Their entire strategy is to plant seeds of doubt, to make you question your own identity until you break under the pressure.”

“He didn’t sound like he was guessing,” I argued, tears spilling over my lashes as I looked up at him. “He looked right at me, Dominic. He knew who I was before he even stepped through that door. If Victor Costa’s father was the head of security for your family when Elena vanished... and my mother raised me in hiding with a locket that belonged to your sister... who was my father?”

Dominic closed his eyes for a long moment, a muscle twitching in his jaw as he wrestled with a truth he had spent a decade trying to uncover.

“Twenty-four years ago, when Elena was taken from our summer estate, the internal security audit pointed to only one man who had the clearance, the access, and the motive to bypass our perimeter alarms,” Dominic said softly, his voice dropping into a heavy, sorrowful register. “His name was Arthur Hayes. He was my father’s most trusted advisor... and your mother’s husband before she disappeared from public records.”

My breath caught in my throat. The room seemed to tilt sideways.

“My… my father?” I whispered, the words feeling alien and grotesque on my tongue. “My father was the man who kidnapped your sister?”

“According to the police reports and the syndicate archives my investigators uncovered years ago, Arthur Hayes vanished the same night Elena disappeared,” Dominic continued, opening his eyes to look straight into mine. “He took a little girl with him—a little girl who looked remarkably like the sister I lost. But when our men tracked Arthur down in Cleveland years later, he had died of a sudden heart attack, and your mother was living under an assumed name with a baby girl she claimed was her biological child.”

He squeezed my hands gently.

“For years, I believed Arthur Hayes was a monster who sold my sister to the highest bidder in the eastern syndicate. But if that assassin was right... if Arthur Hayes was protecting Elena, or if your mother was hiding a secret far deeper than we realized... then everything I thought I knew about my family’s tragedy is a lie.”

Before I could process the staggering weight of his words, the bedside intercom buzzed sharply.

Enzo’s voice crackled through the small speaker, tense and urgent.

“Boss, you need to see this down in the holding cell. Our intruder didn’t act alone. He had a secure satellite transmitter on him, and the data packet he was trying to upload before I tackled him... it’s an encrypted archive addressed directly to Victor Costa. And it contains medical records from St. Catherine’s hospital.”

Dominic stood up instantly, his protective instincts overriding every other thought. He looked down at me, hesitation warring with urgency in his dark eyes.

“Stay here,” Dominic ordered softly, grabbing a secure tablet from the side table. “Enzo has the perimeter locked down tighter than a federal vault, and I’ve stationed two armed guards outside this door. I’ll be back before you even realize I’m gone.”
