Chapter 9 - The Final Audit

Dawn broke over the Hudson River, washing the jagged Manhattan skyline in brilliant streaks of gold and crimson. Outside the Westchester estate, the scene looked like a military staging ground. Two federal transport vans sat parked near the grand portico, escorted by heavily armed FBI tactical agents loading zip-tied mercenaries into the back.

Inside the command bunker, the computer monitors were fully restored, glowing brightly as Enzo executed the final phase of Dominic’s master plan.

“The federal wire warrants have been executed across all three of Costa’s primary holding corporations in the Caymans and Panama,” Enzo reported, typing rapidly on his laptop while sipping a cold black coffee. “Asset freeze orders hit every single one of his commercial accounts at 6:00 AM sharp. By noon, Victor Costa won’t even have enough liquidity to buy a cup of coffee on Park Avenue.”

Dominic stood near the window of the east wing suite, watching the federal convoy roll down the private driveway toward the security gates. He held a steaming cup of coffee in his hand, his posture relaxed for the first time in days.

I sat in the armchair nearby, wrapped in my wool blanket, watching the sunlight play across the gold wedding band resting on my finger.

The ring that had started as a legal fiction to protect a dying waitress in an ICU bed now felt like something entirely different—a true anchor tying me to a family I thought I’d never have.

Isabella walked into the room carrying a tray with two fresh plates of breakfast, setting them gently on the table before walking over to me and pressing a warm, lingering kiss to the top of my head.

“You should be resting, Elena,” Isabella said softly, using my real name with a natural, flowing warmth that brought a quiet smile to my lips.

“I’m tired of resting, Isabella,” I replied, looking up at her with a gentle smile. “For twenty-six years, I lived in fear of bills, landlords, and shadows I couldn't even name. I’m done hiding.”

Dominic turned away from the window, walking over to stand beside my chair. He looked down at me, the dark shadows of exhaustion finally fading from his face, replaced by an expression of fierce, unyielding devotion.

“You’ll never have to hide again,” Dominic promised quietly. “Costa is finished. His empire is being dismantled piece by piece by the Department of Justice, and his name is being scrubbed from every legitimate ledger in New York. You are safe. We are safe.”

I reached out, placing my hand over his where it rested on the arm of my chair, feeling the steady warmth of his skin.

“What happens now, Dominic?” I asked softly. “Now that I’m not Clara Hayes the catering temp... and I’m not just a stranger who took seven bullets?”

Dominic smiled—a rare, genuine smile that transformed the cold, formidable billionaire into the brother I had spent a lifetime searching for without knowing it.

“Now,” Dominic said, his dark eyes shining with quiet triumph, “we rebuild the Rossi family. Together.”
