Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the Archives

The subterranean holding cells beneath the Westchester estate were cold, sterile, and designed to look more like a high-end corporate archive than a dungeon. Stripped of his tactical mask, the captured intruder—a scarred, middle-aged operative named Miller who had spent ten years working black-ops security for Costa Logistics—sat handcuffed to a steel bolted chair under the harsh glare of a single overhead spotlight.
Dominic walked into the cell, his dark jacket swishing against his legs, his expression colder than the winter wind outside. Enzo stood off to the side, tapping away on a secure Panasonic toughbook connected to the encrypted satellite transmitter they had seized from Miller’s vest.
“You’re wasting your time, Rossi,” Miller sneered, blood staining the corner of his lip where Enzo had introduced him to the concrete wall upstairs. “You can lock me in a hole all you want. The data packet cleared our outbound firewall forty seconds before your brute of a guard tackled me. Victor Costa already has what he came for.”
Dominic stepped directly in front of the chair, leaning down until his face was inches from Miller’s. He didn't raise his voice; his tone was dangerously quiet, carrying the weight of a man pushed to the absolute edge.
“What data packet, Miller?” Dominic asked softly. “What could you possibly have stolen from a hospital room that interests Victor so much?”
Miller grinned, revealing yellowed teeth. “Ask your new bride about her blood work, boss. Turns out when you get shot seven times, the hospital runs comprehensive genetic sequencing and toxicology screens. A routine protocol. But when our inside contact at St. Catherine’s ran Clara’s DNA profile against the cold-case missing persons database from twenty-four years ago... well, let’s just say the math doesn't lie.”
Enzo snapped his head up from the toughbook, his blue eyes wide with sudden alarm. “Boss—I’m pulling the encrypted file packet right now. The hospital database was breached at 1:00 AM. They didn't just steal medical records... they cross-referenced Clara’s mitochondrial DNA with the familial DNA profile we submitted to the state missing persons registry back when Elena vanished.”
Dominic’s breath hitched. He stepped back from Miller, turning sharply toward Enzo. “What does it say?”
Enzo swallowed hard, his fingers flying across the keyboard to decrypt the final layer of the secure file. A digital PDF document materialized on the screen, accompanied by a side-by-side genetic probability chart.
“Boss... it’s a 99.98% match,” Enzo whispered, the words hanging heavy in the cold air of the cell. “Clara isn't Arthur Hayes's daughter. According to the genetic marker sequencing... Clara is Elena Rossi.”
The room seemed to spin. Dominic stared at the screen, the color completely draining from his face as the terrifying, impossible reality crashed down around him.
The girl he had legally married beside an ICU bed while she lay bleeding from seven gunshot wounds... the waitress who had taken a bullet meant for Isabella... the stranger he had brought into his home to protect from Victor Costa...
