Chapter 10 - Dawn at the Docks

The crimson and blue emergency strobes painted the industrial yard in a flashing, surreal waltz as a dozen federal cruisers and unmarked tactical vans boxed in the entire complex. Armed agents poured out from the vehicles, their weapons drawn, securing the perimeter before anyone could fire another shot.
Yuri’s knees buckled as federal marshals swarmed in, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists and dragging him away toward a waiting transport van. Petrov was hauled up off the gravel by two local officers, cursing in Russian as he was shoved into the back of a squad car.
Calder stood near the open door of the Navigator, breathing heavily, his hands resting on his hips as he watched the operation unfold with absolute calm.
Claire walked up beside him, holding Emma’s hand. The little girl looked tired, her eyes heavy with sleep, but her small face was finally free of terror. She looked up at Calder, letting go of Claire's hand for just a second to reach out and touch the sleeve of his coat.
"Are the bad men gone forever?" Emma whispered.
Calder knelt down, meeting her eyes with a gentle warmth that only she and Claire ever got to see. "They're gone, Emma. They won't ever bother you or your mother again."
Claire offered a soft, watery smile, tears welling in her eyes as she looked at Calder. "You really are something else, Calder Moretti. You walk into a war zone just to keep a promise to a little girl."
"I told you," Calder said softly, standing back up to his full height as the first pale light of dawn began to break over the East River, turning the dark water into a sheet of shimmering silver. "I always keep my promises."
Director Harris of the federal internal affairs division walked over from the command vehicle, holding a thick manila folder under his arm. He stopped a few feet away, eyeing Calder and Claire with a mixture of professional respect and grim caution.
"Well, Moretti," Harris said, flipping the folder open. "You cleared out Yuri's entire North American logistics network in one night. The federal judges are already signing the asset forfeiture orders for his shell companies."
"And the political corruption charges?" Calder asked flatly.
"They go all the way to the state senate," Harris replied, closing the folder with a sharp snap. "Your name is clear of the federal warrants, Calder. The board is clean. But..."
Harris paused, casting a long look out toward the harbor where the sun was now fully rising over the New York skyline.
"What is it, Harris?" Calder narrowed his eyes.
"Yuri didn't build this syndicate alone," Harris said quietly, leaning in just a fraction. "He had a silent partner—someone sitting on the federal oversight committee who holds the master decryption keys to every shipping manifest in the tristate area. And according to Yuri's encrypted server logs, that partner just activated a remote wipe protocol."
Calder’s expression darkened instantly. He looked down at Claire, whose face suddenly went completely pale.
Before anyone could speak, a piercing, high-pitched alarm began to wail from the master terminal inside the Navigator. Calder spun around and yanked open the driver's door.

The dashboard screen flashed from black to brilliant crimson, displaying a single, chilling message typed out in real-time across the monitor:
“Game over, Moretti. The shipment at Pier 88 has just been cleared for international transit... with your name on the cargo manifest.”
