Chapter 7 - Breaking the Blockade

The impact was a concussive shockwave of twisted steel and shattering glass. The front reinforced bumper of the Lincoln Navigator smashed into the passenger-side door of the lead SUV, sending the heavier vehicle spinning sideways across the icy pavement like a toy. Shards of safety glass showered over the hood as Marco kept the pedal pinned to the floor, plowing through the wreckage with brute mechanical force.

"Hold on!" Marco roared, wrenching the wheel hard to the right to avoid a guardrail.

Bullets pinged off the armored side panels, sparking orange flashes in the night. Inside the cabin, Claire pulled Emma down onto the floorboards, throwing her own body over the child to shield her from potential shrapnel. Calder remained upright, unhooking his submachine gun from the seat mount and cocking the bolt with a sharp, lethal metallic snap.

"Marco, pull hard left past the off-ramp into the industrial park," Calder ordered, his eyes locked on the side mirror where two of Petrov's SUVs were desperately trying to recover and turn around. "Let's see how brave they are when we change the turf."

The Navigator fishtailed violently across a patch of black ice, its tires smoking as it shot down an abandoned loading ramp behind a seafood processing plant. The area was a labyrinth of dark alleys, high brick walls, and rusting shipping containers—a maze Calder knew down to every shadow and drainpipe.

Marco killed the headlights entirely, plunging the vehicle into pitch blackness as he cut the engine behind a towering stack of refrigerated crates.

The silence that followed was absolute, save for the ticking of the cooling exhaust pipe and Emma’s soft, frightened whimpers from the floor.

"Shh, sweetheart, you're safe," Claire whispered, her voice cracking as she cradled the little girl against her chest. She looked up at Calder, her eyes wide in the dim ambient light. "They're going to hunt us down through these docks until there's nothing left."

"Let them try," Calder said, sliding open the side door of the Navigator just an inch. "This is our neighborhood. They're just visitors."

He stepped out into the freezing night air, the submachine gun resting easily in his gloved hands. He didn't wait for Marco to follow. He melted into the shadows of the containers, his eyes scanning the perimeter.

Footsteps crunched against the gravel thirty yards away. Shouts in rapid Russian echoed through the damp alleyway as two of Petrov's enforcers fanned out, their flashlights cutting erratic beams through the fog.

Calder stepped out directly behind them, his voice slicing through the cold air like a razor.

"Looking for someone?"

Both men spun around, but before they could raise their weapons, the heavy butt of Calder's submachine gun cracked into the jaw of the first enforcer, dropping him instantly. The second man lunged forward with a combat knife, but Calder sidestepped with fluid grace, swept the man's legs out from under him, and drove his boot down hard onto the enforcer's wrist. The knife clattered harmlessly onto the gravel.

Calder grabbed the man by the collar, dragging him up until their faces were inches apart.

"Tell me where your captain is keeping the ledger," Calder growled.

The enforcer spat a mouthful of blood onto the pavement, laughing weakly. "You... you think Viktor is the head of this snake? You're already dead, Moretti. The Brighton syndicate answers to someone you can't touch."

Before Calder could press him further, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the shadows directly behind him.
