Chapter 9 - The Trunk Unleashed

Yuri’s expression shifted from smug triumph to sudden, sharp confusion. "What did you say?"

Before Yuri could issue a command to his snipers, a deafening explosion of bent steel and shattered fiberglass echoed across the loading dock.

The heavy rear trunk lid of the Lincoln Navigator blew entirely off its hinges, rocketing backward through the air like a missile before crashing down onto the gravel ten feet away. Out of the dark cavity tumbled Viktor Petrov—bruised, bleeding, and gasping violently for air, with his hands securely bound behind his back with industrial zip-ties.

"Get him!" Yuri shrieked, his composure shattering instantly. "Shoot him! Shoot them all!"

The snipers on the catwalks scrambled to adjust their aim, but they were half a second too late.

From the shadows behind the high container stack, Marco—who had managed to trigger the vehicle’s remote defense override from his tactical console—unleashed a deafening burst of suppressive fire from the Navigator’s integrated grill-mounted strobe and pepper-spray cannons. A blinding wall of high-intensity light and chemical fog instantly engulfed the catwalks, sending Yuri’s snipers tumbling backward in blind panic.

Calder didn't wait. He lunged forward off the ground, closing the ten-foot gap between himself and Yuri before the syndicate boss could draw his hidden shoulder holster.

Calder slammed his shoulder directly into Yuri’s chest, driving him backward against the cold corrugated wall of the shipping container with a bone-rattling crash. Yuri gasped for air, his tablet flying from his hand and shattering against the pavement.

"You lost, Yuri," Calder growled, pressing his forearm hard against the older man's windpipe.

Petrov struggled to his knees on the gravel, coughing violently, looking up at Yuri with a mix of betrayal and sheer terror. "Yuri... you left me in that box... you absolute bastard..."

"Shut up, Viktor!" Yuri choked out, clawing weakly at Calder's forearm. "Moretti... you can't kill me. If I die, the federal warrants against your entire shipping empire execute automatically within the hour. You'll spend the rest of your life in a supermax prison."

Calder leaned in closer, his dark eyes burning with an intense, unyielding fire. "Let them execute. I built this empire with my bare hands once, Yuri. I can build it again."

Before Calder could finish the sentence, the wail of approaching sirens suddenly cut through the night air—dozens of them, screaming from every direction along the highway and service roads.

Not Petrov’s men. Not Yuri’s enforcers.

The actual, uncorrupted federal task force, led by an entirely new division of Justice Department investigators, was swarming the perimeter.
