Chapter 8 - The Brighton Ultimatum

"Drop the weapon, Moretti. Or the girl’s mother gets a front-row seat to your funeral."

Calder froze. Slowly, deliberately, he lowered his weapon and turned around.

Standing ten paces away at the corner of the container stack was a tall, lean man in a tailored obsidian overcoat. His silver-streaked hair was combed back with military precision, and a thin, elegant scar cut across his left cheekbone. He wasn't holding a gun; instead, he held a sleek European tactical tablet in one hand, while his other hand casually rested on the shoulder of a trembling, middle-aged man wearing an expensive municipal suit—the exact city finance official Claire had mentioned earlier.

"Yuri," Calder said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy hum. "I thought the Bratva left you buried in a shallow grave outside of Boston ten years ago."

Yuri’s lips twitched into a cold, humorless smile. "People change addresses, Calder. Especially when they realize that controlling the politicians who issue municipal permits is far more lucrative than smuggling contraband through rotting docks."

Yuri gestured with the tablet toward the Navigator parked fifty feet away. Through the tinted rear window, Calder could see Marco trapped inside, held at gunpoint by two snipers positioned on the container catwalks overhead.

"Step away from my man, Calder," Yuri commanded softly. "And tell the woman to bring the child out here. We can settle this like civilized men."

"There's nothing civilized about you, Yuri," Claire's voice rang out clearly from the open door of the Navigator.

She stepped out onto the gravel, refusing to cower, keeping Emma securely hidden behind her skirt. She glared at the silver-haired syndicate boss with a fury that made even Yuri’s cold expression falter for a fraction of a second.

"You killed my father to steal the Henderson ledgers," Claire spat, her voice trembling with decades of suppressed rage. "And you spent thirty years hiding behind shell corporations and bought-off judges because you were too cowardly to face what my family built."

Yuri chuckled, a dry, papery sound. "My dear Claire, your father was a dreamer who thought honesty could buy loyalty in New York. The world doesn't run on honor, Moretti. It runs on leverage." He turned his gaze back to Calder. "And right now, I have all the leverage. Drop your gun, kick it across the gravel, or I give the order to wipe every single soul in that vehicle off the map."

Calder looked at Yuri, then glanced up at the sniper lasers dancing across the roof of the Navigator. His jaw tightened, the muscle ticking furiously. He slowly bent his knees, placing the submachine gun flat on the frozen ground.

Yuri smiled, stepping forward with his hand outstretched to retrieve the weapon. "A wise choice, Calder. Now, let's talk about how we divide the city."

"There's only one problem, Yuri," Calder said, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper as he remained in a crouch.

Yuri paused, frowning. "And what's that?"

"You forgot to check the trunk."
