Chapter 6 - The Trunk Ride to Hell

The cold metal of the trunk lid slammed shut with a finality that echoed through the damp concrete vaults of the Red Hook shipyard, plunging Viktor Petrov into total, suffocating darkness.
Outside, the muffled roar of the Lincoln Navigator’s high-performance V8 engine vibrated through the floorboards. Calder Moretti sat in the back seat, staring blankly out the bulletproof window at the jagged silhouette of the Manhattan skyline across the East River. Claire sat on his right, wrapped tightly in his spare wool coat, her head resting against his shoulder while she softly stroked Emma’s hair. The little girl had finally cried herself to sleep, her small face buried in the crook of Claire's arm, her fingers still loosely clutching the plush rabbit Marco had fished out from her jacket pocket.
Up front, Marco gripped the steering wheel, his eyes darting frequently to the rearview mirror.
"The roads into Brighton Beach are crawling with Petrov’s secondary crews, Boss," Marco warned, his voice low so as not to wake the child. "Word of what went down at the dry dock is already leaking through the channels. If we head straight for his headquarters on Brighton Beach Avenue, we’re driving right into a hornet's nest."
"Let them swarm," Calder replied, his voice completely devoid of emotion. "A hornet's nest only stings if you let it sit. We hit them before they realize their queen is locked in the trunk."
"And the feds?" Claire asked softly, her voice raspy from hours of terror and dehydration. She turned her hazel eyes up to meet Calder’s dark gaze. "Petrov wasn't acting alone, Calder. He had backing from someone inside the municipal finance department—someone who cleared the shipping lane manifests for those black sedans."
Calder gently pulled a stray strand of hair away from her face, his thumb brushing her cheek. "We’ll deal with the politicians after we settle the score with the Brighton crew. Right now, nobody touches you or Emma. That’s a promise."
Suddenly, the car gave a violent lurch as Marco slammed on the brakes, swerving sharply onto an unpaved service road flanking the Belt Parkway.
From the darkness ahead, three heavy black SUVs pulled out from an overpass, their high-beam headlights blindingly bright, blocking all four lanes of traffic. Through the glare, armed men poured out onto the asphalt, raising tactical shotguns and assault rifles toward the oncoming Navigator.
"Ambush!" Marco barked, dropping the transmission into reverse with a deafening grind of gears. "Boss, they’re trying to box us in!"
Calder didn't flinch. He slid his hand into his vest, pulling out a heavy encrypted radio transceiver. "Marco, don't back up. Keep driving straight toward them."
Marco shot him a wild look in the rearview mirror. "Boss, they’ll chew this chassis to pieces!"
"Do it," Calder commanded, his voice dropping into that absolute, terrifying register that brooks no argument.

Marco gritted his teeth, stomped his foot down on the accelerator, and roared forward directly at the blockade.
