Chapter 1 - The Shattered Facade

The wine glass in Vanessa’s hand trembled, the deep red liquid sloshing dangerously close to the rim before stabilizing as her sharp, predatory eyes locked onto mine.
For three agonizing seconds, neither of us breathed. The muffled laughter of the elite guests echoed faintly from the dining room down the hall, contrasting sharply with the ice-cold silence filling Brandon’s office. Vanessa hadn't expected to find me here, rifling through the hidden compartment of her husband's desk, holding the exact proof of their financial crimes and elder abuse.
Then, the shock on her face melted into a twisted, venomous sneer. She took a slow, deliberate step into the room, kicking the door shut behind her with a sharp click that sealed us off from the rest of the house.
"You really don't know when to quit, do you, little nurse?" Vanessa hissed, her voice dropping into a low, venomous register. She set her wine glass down on the edge of the mahogany desk, crossing her arms over the shimmering fabric of her designer dress. "Sneaking around like a common thief in a home that doesn't belong to you."
"A home that doesn't belong to me?" I repeated, keeping my voice dangerously steady as my thumb hovered over the camera app on my phone, making sure every photo of the trust documents and offshore routing numbers was securely backed up to the cloud. "Vanessa, I bought these walls. I paid for the bricks, the mortgage, the roof over your ungrateful head. You and Brandon are nothing more than squatters living off my mother's misery."
Vanessa let out a shrill, mocking laugh. "Oh, honey, possession is nine-tenths of the law, but paperwork is the other ten. And right now? Every single legal title, every deed, and every financial asset in this house bears Brandon's signature or your mother's notarized consent. You think a few photos on your phone are going to change that? You're a nurse, Maya. You heal people; you don't litigate complex corporate and real estate fraud."
"Try me," I said, stepping out from behind the desk, standing tall and unwavering. "Let's see how well your upscale friends and your precious social standing survive when the police pull up and arrest you both for elder abuse and grand larceny."
Vanessa's eyes flashed with genuine panic for a fraction of a second, but she quickly masked it behind a mask of chilling confidence. She lunged forward, trying to slap the phone out of my hand.
I sidestepped her with ease, my ICU reflexes kicking in, and shoved her back against the bookshelf. The impact rattled the decorative frames, sending a crystal paperweight crashing to the hardwood floor.
"Don't you ever touch me again," I whispered, stepping close enough that she could see the cold fury burning in my eyes.

Before Vanessa could recover her balance or scream for help, the office door flew wide open, crashing against the wall with a thunderous bang. Brandon stood in the doorway, his face red with alcoholic rage, breathing heavily as he surveyed the shattered crystal and his wife pinned against the shelf.
"What the hell is going on in here?" Brandon roared, his eyes darting from Vanessa to the open secret compartment behind the desk.
