Chapter 9 - The Hidden Clause

My breath caught in my throat. I stood frozen in the foyer as the federal agents moved around me, barking orders into their radios.
"Maya?" Mom asked, noticing the sudden drain of color from my face as she walked up behind me. "What is it? Who is texting you?"
"Nothing, Mom. Just... spam," I lied quickly, sliding the phone into my pocket with a shaking hand.
I couldn't let her see the panic threatening to unravel me. I waited until Agent Miller walked back toward the front door to coordinate the next phase of the raid.
"Agent Miller," I said, keeping my voice low so my mother wouldn't overhear. "When you reviewed the primary trust documents last night... did you look at page forty-four of Mom's medical trust?"
Miller frowned, flipping through the clipboard in his hand. "Page forty-four? That was listed as an addendum regarding long-term institutional care directives. Why? Is there an issue?"
"Check it right now," I urged, my chest tightening with a sudden, suffocating dread. "Please."
Miller flipped rapidly through the paperwork, his eyes scanning the dense legal jargon until they stopped dead on the designated page. I watched his face—the hardened expression of a seasoned financial crimes investigator—drain of color as he read the fine print.
"Good lord," Miller muttered under his breath, looking up at me with wide, horrified eyes.
"What does it say?" I demanded.
"This isn't just about financial embezzlement or property fraud," Miller said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "According to this notarized addendum—signed using your mother's legal power of attorney three years ago—all decisions regarding her medical guardianship, physical location, and asset allocation were legally transferred not to Brandon... but to a private medical corporation registered in the Cayman Islands."
The foyer seemed to spin on its axis.
"A medical corporation?" I repeated, my voice hollow. "What kind of corporation?"
Before Miller could answer, my phone buzzed again in my hand. It wasn't a text message this time. It was a live alert notification from the local hospital system downtown, where I had spent years working in the ICU units.
