Chapter 8 - Dawn of the Reckoning

The first pale streaks of grey dawn began to filter through the sheer curtains of the guest bedroom, casting a quiet, solemn light over the room.

Neither Mom nor I had gone back to sleep. We sat together on the edge of the queen-sized mattress, the heavy plastic briefcase sitting squarely on the floor between us like a neutralized bomb. My mother leaned her head gently against my shoulder, her breathing calm for the first time in two years.

"I'm sorry I let him do this, Maya," she whispered, her voice cracking softly. "I was just... so afraid of losing what was left of our family."

"You didn't lose anything, Mom," I murmured, wrapping my arm tightly around her shoulders and kissing the top of her head. "You just finally saw the truth. And we're going to fix it."

At 7:00 AM sharp, the quiet hum of the suburban morning was abruptly shattered by the deep, heavy rumble of a heavy-duty engine pulling up onto our driveway.

I walked over to the front window and parted the blinds. Two unmarked dark federal vehicles blocked the driveway, their engines idling. Three men in dark windbreakers and local police uniforms stepped out, walking purposefully toward our front door.

Agent Miller—the federal investigator I had spoken to briefly during the initial audit files—was at the front, holding a clipboard and a federal arrest warrant.

I unlocked the front door and pulled it open before they even had a chance to knock.

"Dr. Bennett," Agent Miller said, nodding respectfully. "I trust you received the digital files we transmitted overnight?"

"I did," I replied, stepping aside to let them enter the foyer. I reached down and picked up the heavy plastic briefcase from the hallway table, handing it directly to him. "And I have everything else right here. Bearer bonds, offshore hard drives, and the physical ledger detailing every fraudulent transaction Brandon and Marcus executed."

Miller popped the latches, cast a quick glance inside the case, and looked up with a tight, approving smile. "This changes everything. Where is your brother?"

"He bolted around two in the morning," I said evenly. "He's likely heading for his corporate office downtown or trying to liquidate his secondary accounts before the freeze hits."

"We've already frozen his primary and secondary accounts nationwide," Miller replied, signaling to his team. "Agent Harrison, secure the perimeter and issue an all-ports alert for Brandon Moretti."

As the federal agents fanned out across the house to secure the evidence, I turned back to my mother, feeling a profound, long-overdue sense of relief settling into my bones. But as my phone buzzed violently in my pocket with an incoming text message from an unknown number, the cold grip of reality pulled me back in.

I pulled the phone out and looked at the glowing screen.

If you think Brandon was the only one running this scheme, Dr. Bennett, you're about to find out how deep the rabbit hole really goes. Look at your mother's medical trust files—page forty-four.
