Chapter 2 - The Ultimatum

Brandon’s gaze landed on the open compartment, and the color drained completely from his face. He lunged across the room, shoving Vanessa aside, and slammed the false panel shut with a violent kick.

"You bitch," Brandon snarled, turning on me with his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. "You were snooping. You went through my private files."

"Your private files?" I fired back, refusing to flinch as I stood my ground in the center of the office. "You mean the files detailing how you stole a quarter of a million dollars of Dad's inheritance, forged Mom's signature, and took out a secondary mortgage to fund your fake lifestyle while treating our mother like a caged animal?"

"Keep your voice down!" Brandon hissed, glancing frantically toward the hallway where the faint murmur of dinner guests could still be heard. "The guests will hear you!"

"Good! Let them hear! Let's invite them in right now and tell them what kind of man the successful local businessman Brandon Moretti really is!" I reached into my pocket, my fingers wrapping firmly around my phone. "I'm calling the police, Brandon. It's over. You're done."

Brandon’s expression twisted into something truly terrifying. The desperate brother facade completely evaporated, replaced by a cold, calculated ruthlessness. He took a sudden step forward, faster than I anticipated, and grabbed my wrist with a crushing grip, wrenching my arm behind my back to prevent me from pulling out the phone.

"You're not calling anyone," Brandon whispered fiercely, leaning in close so his alcohol-laden breath washed over my face. "You think you hold all the cards, Maya? Think about Mom for one second. If the police get involved, if this goes public, the house goes into immediate foreclosure. The bank freezes all assets during the investigation. Do you know where Mom goes then? Not to a nice hotel. She goes straight to county social services—into a state-run, overcrowded nursing home where she'll spend her final years locked in a sterile room with zero care."

The words hit me like a physical blow. I stopped struggling, my breath catching in my throat. He knew my weak spot. He knew I would endure anything, sacrifice anything, to protect our mother from further suffering.

Vanessa recovered her footing, smoothing down her dress with a smug, victorious smile. She stepped up beside Brandon, her eyes gleaming with malice.

"That's right, Maya," Vanessa purred. "You can play the brave, heroic nurse all you want, but your mother's well-being is tied directly to our survival. If we go down, we're taking her down with us. Now... give me that phone."

I stared at them, my heart hammering against my ribs, torn between my burning desire for justice and the terrifying reality of what would happen to Mom if I blew up their lives tonight.

"No," I whispered defiantly. "I won't give you the phone. But here is my counteroffer."

Brandon narrowed his eyes, tightening his grip on my wrist just a fraction. "What are you talking about?"

"You give Mom her bedroom back tonight," I said, my voice cold and unyielding. "You move her out of that freezing laundry room, you clear out Vanessa's mother, and you treat her with basic human decency starting right now. And as for me? I'm staying in this house. You're going to give me a key, and I'm going to audit every single account you manage until every penny of Dad's money is accounted for."

Vanessa let out an incredulous scoff. "Are you out of your mind? You think we're going to let you move in and police our lives?"

"You don't have a choice," I replied, holding up my other hand to display the glowing screen of my phone, which was currently recording audio and streaming every word directly to a secure cloud drive. "Because if you refuse, I press 'send' to the local district attorney's office and the Chicago Tribune before you can even pour your next glass of wine."
