Chapter 2 - The Flash of the Lens

Victoria’s hand hung suspended in the air for a fraction of a second, trembling with pure, unadulterated rage, before she caught herself and dropped it to her side. She sneered, stepping closer until the expensive scent of her perfume overpowered the neutral air of my kitchen.

"You think you're clever, don't you?" Victoria whispered, her voice dropping into a venomous hiss. "You think because you managed a few regional distribution accounts before my son rescued you from obscurity that you're a businesswoman. You are nothing. A temporary placeholder. A financial vessel that outlived its utility."

I didn't flinch. I didn't step back. I simply tapped the screen of my phone twice.

"Mr. Davis," I said, looking past Victoria directly at the security guard still lingering in the doorway. "Did you record Mrs. Bennett's physical threat and her forced entry?"

The guard hesitated, then nodded slowly, tapping the lapel of his uniform where a body-worn security camera blinked a steady, recording green. "Yes, Ms. Sophia. I caught everything from the hallway up to the breach."

Victoria’s face drained of color for a split second before she recovered her haughty glare. "That camera means nothing! My family owns half the commercial real estate on this island! You'll be tied up in civil court until you're bankrupt!"

"Mom, stop," Richard muttered, finally grabbing his mother’s arm and pulling her back toward the foyer. "Look around. Look at her phone. She’s not playing games, Mom. The freeze on her accounts—she wasn't bluffing."

"Of course she wasn't bluffing," I said, walking slowly around the kitchen island toward them. "Because every single dollar the Bennett family has spent over the last four years—from your country club dues, Richard, to your mother’s charitable gala donations and her penthouse maintenance fees—didn't come from the Bennett family trust. It came from my personal venture capital holding company."

Richard stared at me, his mouth parting slightly. "That’s... that’s impossible. My father’s estate—"

"Your father’s estate went bankrupt during the 2008 crash, Richard," I interrupted, my voice sharp and clinical. "Your mother kept up appearances by liquidating the last of your family’s worthless land holdings right before I met you. By the time we married, the Bennett name was a hollow corporate shell. For five years, I funded your lifestyle, your mother’s vanity, and your father’s ghost."

Victoria let out a strangled gasp, clutching her pearls as if she were having a heart attack. "You lying, manipulative shrew! How dare you—!"

"I dare because I kept the receipts," I said, holding up my phone.

And right on cue, the chime of an incoming email notification rang through the quiet apartment.

I glanced down at the screen. It wasn't an email from my lawyer. It was an urgent alert from my private security firm downstairs.

Warning: Unauthorized asset transfer attempted from primary corporate holding account. IP address traced to Bennett Family Holdings, downtown office.

I looked up at Richard and Victoria, a cold, sharp smile touching the corners of my lips. "Well, look at that. It appears your father’s old corporate office is currently trying to raid my secondary reserve accounts."

Richard went entirely gray. "What? That’s impossible... we didn't authorize—"

"Your father’s signature was required," Victoria snapped, though her voice wavered for the first time.

"Your father has been dead for three years, Victoria," I reminded her softly. "And his signature was forged on your corporate filings last Tuesday."

Before either of them could respond, the heavy oak front door swung open again without a knock.
