Chapter 8 - The Leverage Game

"Divide the trust?" I let out a dry, sharp laugh that cut through the howling river wind. "You stole my physical drive, tracked my movements through a corrupt building guard, and lured me out to a freezing pier just to negotiate a financial partnership?"
Arthur didn't blink. He raised the titanium drive an inch, letting the morning light catch its brushed metal casing. "It’s not a partnership, Sophia. It’s an insurance policy. My sister and nephew are currently sitting in a federal holding cell, howling like trapped animals because they thought they were invincible. But they were merely instruments. I am the architect who engineered the Bennett family's original corporate restructuring twenty years ago."
"So you're the one who helped my father-in-law cook the books before he crashed and burned," I said, my voice dropping into a steady, controlled rage.
"I taught him how to breathe underwater," Arthur corrected smoothly. "Until he tried to double-cross me and keep the primary asset registry for himself. That’s when the 'bankruptcy' happened. That’s when your precious offshore trust was quietly tucked away where the federal investigators couldn't touch it."
He took a slow step toward me, his cane clicking against the pavement.
"And now, you have stumbled into the center of a spider's web, Sophia. You thought you outsmarted Victoria by freezing her credit cards? You merely woke the beast."
"You talk about the beast as if you aren't holding a stolen hard drive that contains your own signature on every illegal wire transfer from the last two decades," I countered, refusing to back down an inch. "If I go down, Arthur, every single offshore account you own goes down with me. The DOJ doesn't care about family trees; they care about paper trails."
Arthur stopped. For a fraction of a second, the calm, aristocratic mask slipped, revealing a flash of genuine calculation behind his pale eyes.
"You think I'm afraid of the DOJ?" he murmured softly. "My assets are distributed across six different sovereign jurisdictions that don't recognize American extradition laws. The only thing standing between me and complete financial freedom is the master decryption key to the titanium drive—a key that only exists inside your memory."
"Then you'll have to shoot me and throw me in the Hudson," I said evenly. "Because you'll never get the key."

Before Arthur could raise his cane or signal the shadow stepping out behind the shipping container, the blare of a police siren shattered the quiet air of the pier.
