Chapter 9 - The Harbor Ambush

The wailing shriek of federal sirens echoed off the corrugated metal walls of the shipping containers as three unmarked black SUVs tore through the entry gate of the pier, their high beams blindingly bright in the damp morning air.

Arthur spun around, cursing viciously. "You called the feds?"

"I didn't have to," I replied, dropping into a defensive stance. "Vaughn always leaves a tracking beacon on my primary keys."

Agent Miller leaped out of the lead SUV, his service weapon drawn and pointed directly at Arthur Sterling. "Federal agents! Drop the drive and put your hands behind your head where I can see them!"

Arthur looked from the advancing federal agents back to me, a dark, calculating fury twisting his features. He realized the trap had snapped shut—not on me, but on him.

"This isn't over, Sophia," Arthur hissed through clenched teeth.

With a sudden, violent motion, he hurled the titanium backup drive directly into the dark, churning waters of the Hudson River.

"No!" I screamed, lunging forward, but it was too late. The metallic clatter of the drive hitting the water was swallowed instantly by the roaring current.

Agent Miller reached Arthur in three strides, slamming him hard against the side of the shipping container and snapping steel cuffs around his wrists. "Arthur Sterling, you are under arrest for corporate espionage, obstruction of justice, and international wire fraud."

As officers swarmed the area, securing Arthur and pushing him toward the back of an SUV, I stood at the very edge of the concrete pier, staring down at the dark, grey waves where months of meticulous evidence had just vanished beneath the surface.

Footsteps crunched on the gravel behind me.

I turned to see Vaughn walking up slowly, his hands tucked into his trench coat pockets, looking entirely unbothered by the dramatic turn of events.

"You let him throw it in the river," I accused, my voice shaking with cold fury as I glared at him. "Vaughn, that drive had every single wire transfer and offshore account number we needed to finish them!"

"Did it?" Vaughn asked calmly, stopping a few feet away from me and gazing out at the river. "Sophia, do you really think I would let you walk into a trap with the only physical copy of our master ledger?"

I blinked, the anger temporarily giving way to confusion. "What are you talking about?"

May you like

Vaughn reached into his inside pocket and pulled out an identical titanium drive, tossing it smoothly into my hands.
