Chapter 3 - The Federal Mandate

Two men in dark suits stepped past the terrified building guard into my entryway, their IDs flashing in the ambient morning light before they tucked them back into their breast pockets.

"Mrs. Sophia Vance?" the lead agent asked, his voice crisp and professional.

"I go by Sophia Hart now," I corrected gently, stepping away from the kitchen island. "And you're right on time, Agent Miller."

Victoria spun around, her eyes wide with sudden panic as she took in the federal badges. "Vance? Hart? What is the meaning of this? Who are you people? We are the Bennetts! You cannot just walk into a private residence—"

"Federal Bureau of Investigation, White-Collar Division, Mrs. Bennett," Agent Miller interrupted smoothly, ignoring her outrage entirely. He pulled a thick folder from his leather briefcase and turned his attention to Richard. "Richard Bennett? And Victoria Bennett? You are both named in an active federal warrant for corporate wire fraud, identity theft, and unauthorized liquidation of protected venture capital assets."

Richard stumbled backward, his back hitting the living room wall with a dull thud. "Fraud? Asset liquidation? There’s some kind of mistake! We haven't touched any venture capital funds—we only accessed our family trust accounts!"

"Your family trust accounts were legally dissolved and reclassified as restricted commercial collateral eighteen months ago," Agent Miller stated, pulling out a multi-page financial ledger and holding it up. "Every single dollar was underwritten by Miss Hart’s private holding firm. When you attempted to transfer two hundred thousand dollars out of the reserve accounts ten minutes ago from your downtown terminal, your IP address triggered an automated federal freeze."

Victoria’s knees buckled. She grabbed onto the edge of the entryway console table to keep from falling, her aristocratic composure completely shattering into jagged pieces of terror and disbelief.

"No..." she whispered, shaking her head violently. "No, this isn't possible. She’s just a girl from a middle-class family. We made her! We gave her our name!"

"You gave me a tax liability and a front-row seat to your financial incompetence," I said, walking over to stand directly in front of my former mother-in-law. "For five years, I watched you treat my hard work like your personal inheritance. The moment the divorce ink dried, you thought you could bully me back into submission by storming my home with a stolen key."

Agent Miller gestured to the second agent, who stepped forward with a pair of steel handcuffs in his hand. "Richard Bennett, Victoria Bennett, turn around and place your hands behind your back."

"Wait!" Richard screamed, panic stripping every ounce of dignity from his voice. "Sophia, please! We were married! We shared a life! You can't just let them arrest us—drop the charges, tell them it’s a misunderstanding!"

"We shared a legal contract, Richard," I replied coldly, watching as the agent clamped the cold steel around his wrists. "And the moment you and your mother decided to break into my home to steal what was never yours, that contract became a criminal indictment."

Victoria let out a shrill, piercing shriek as the second set of cuffs locked around her wrists, her precious cashmere coat twisting awkwardly as the federal agents hauled her toward the open door.

"You'll pay for this!" she screamed, her voice echoing down the hallway as they dragged her past the stunned building guard. "The Bennetts will destroy you! Do you hear me? Destroy you!"

The door clicked shut behind them, leaving a heavy, suffocating silence in the apartment.

I stood alone in the center of the room, breathing in the quiet air for the first time all morning. But before I could even pour a fresh cup of espresso, my phone rang again.
