Chapter 6 - The Phantom Route

The black sedan’s brake lights winked red before disappearing around the corner of Fifth Avenue like a glowing eye mocking my hesitation.
I didn't waste a second arguing with Vaughn. I dropped my phone onto the bed, grabbed my leather jacket from the hook behind the door, and sprinted down the private hallway toward the elevator. The digital display above the doors ticked downward with agonizing slowness. Cursing under my breath, I turned and took the emergency stairwell, my heels clanging against the concrete steps as I descended twelve floors straight to the subterranean garage.
The cool, exhaust-heavy air of the parking level hit my face as I burst through the fire door.
My black Audi Q7 sat in its designated stall, silent and empty. But as I pulled my electronic key fob from my pocket and unlocked the doors, a sharp, metallic glint on the windshield caught my eye.
I stopped dead.
Tucked neatly beneath the driver’s side wiper blade was a small, cream-colored envelope bearing no postage stamp, only a single handwritten letter: S.
My heart hammered against my ribs as I snatched the envelope off the glass, tore the flap open, and pulled out a single sheet of heavy cardstock. Scrawled across the paper in crisp, expensive fountain pen ink was an address in the Meatpacking District and a time: 11:30 AM. Come alone, or the drive goes public.
I checked my dashboard clock. It was 10:15 AM.
Before I could even climb into the driver’s seat, my phone buzzed in my jacket pocket. I pulled it out, expecting Vaughn, but the screen flashed with an incoming call from an unrecognized local landline.
I swiped to answer.
"If you're thinking of calling Vaughn or forwarding this to Agent Miller," a smooth, cultured voice spoke through the receiver—a voice belonging neither to Victoria nor to Richard, "consider what happens to your offshore asset trust when the SEC receives an anonymous tip about its unregistered origins."
"Who is this?" I demanded, gripping the steering wheel with my free hand. "If you have the titanium drive, name your price and let's skip the theatrical games."
A low, cold chuckle hummed through the speaker.
"We don't want your money, Sophia. We want the person who taught you how to build an empire out of ashes. Bring Vaughn to the old shipping pier at 11:30, or watch your entire life dissolve into a federal indictment."

The line went dead with a sharp click.
