Chapter 17 - Echoes in the Steam

The heavy screech of industrial cutting torches biting into the steel fire door echoed down the concrete corridor like a death rattle. Sparks showered against the darkness like miniature fireworks, casting jagged, shifting shadows over Major Emily Carter and Julian Vance as they plunged deeper into the subterranean bowels of Walter Reed.

“Keep moving, Julian. Just a little further,” Emily urged, her hand gripped tightly around his arm to steady his faltering stride.

The air grew heavier, thick with the humid, chemical taint of aged steam pipes and stagnant water. Every breath burned raw in Julian’s lungs, but adrenaline kept him upright. Fifty yards ahead, bathed in the sickly amber hue of a lone emergency exit light, stood the reinforced mainframe junction box—the gateway to the Pentagon’s secure underground fiber-optic transit line.

“I see it,” Julian gasped, his fingers trembling as he reached into his hospital gown pocket and pulled out the matte-black biometric cold-storage drive. Its small status LED blinked a steady, lethal amber. “If this interface hasn't been remotely disabled by their network spoofing, I can bypass the firewall and initiate a secure broadcast straight to the Joint Chiefs' tactical servers.”

“Do it. Now,” Emily commanded, spinning around to watch the rear corridor.

Behind them, the reinforced steel fire door buckled inward with a deafening screech. Hydraulic rams had done their work. Through the billowing cloud of grey smoke and twisted metal, the first matte-black-clad mercenary stepped through, carbine raised, sweeping the dark tunnel with an infrared laser sight.

Emily didn’t hesitate. Drawing General Alexander Hale’s backup sidearm—a compact tactical 9mm she had slipped from his tactical vest during the scramble—she dropped to one knee, braced her wrist against a concrete support pillar, and fired three rapid, calculated shots.

The leading mercenary staggered, hit square in the ceramic chest plate, and collapsed heavily against the steam pipes. The remaining two operators instantly dropped prone, returning suppressive fire that chewed viciously into the concrete inches above Emily’s head, sending a blinding spray of stone dust into her eyes.

“Emily! I’m in!” Julian yelled over the deafening chatter of gunfire. His fingers flew across the hardwired terminal interface, his eyes locked onto the scrolling lines of cascading green code. “The encryption dead-man's switch is transferring! But they’re routing a localized counter-intrusion packet to lock me out!”
