Chapter 7 - Interception at Gate Four

The night air was freezing as Alexander’s black sedan tore through the empty Virginia highway, the confidential military escort vehicle trailing closely behind with its lights dark. We didn't speak during the twenty-minute drive. Every muscle in my body was coiled tight, my mind racing through the catastrophic fallout of what Lucas was attempting to do. If he managed to breach the administrative checkpoint or hand those files to a civilian attorney or tabloid reporter in a desperate bid to smear the general, my family’s name—and my career—would be dragged through a media circus.
When we approached Fort Belvoir’s Gate Four, the scene was already locked down.
Two heavy-duty Humvees blocked the access road, their high-beam headlights slicing blinding white swaths through the mist. Four military police officers in full tactical gear, holding sidearms at the low ready, stood in a tight defensive semicircle around a familiar silver sedan.
It was Lucas’s car.
The driver-side door was swung wide open. Lucas was pressed flat against the hood of his vehicle, his hands wrenched behind his back while a towering sergeant barked instructions into a radio.
“Keep your face against the vehicle! Do not move an inch!”
As our sedan pulled to a halt and the tires crunched over the gravel, Lucas caught sight of us stepping out into the glare of the headlights. His face, illuminated in the harsh white light, was twisted in a mask of hysterical panic and misplaced outrage.
“Emily! Tell these lunatics to let me go!” Lucas shrieked, struggling against the military police officers pinning him down. “You can’t do this! I’m a private citizen! This is kidnapping! My wedding is in twelve hours!”
I walked slowly toward him, my boots crunching rhythmically on the asphalt. Behind me, Alexander moved with the quiet, devastating grace of an apex predator.
“You broke onto a federal military installation, Lucas,” I said, my voice dangerously calm as I stopped a few feet away from him. “You stole classified logistics and personnel data from a staff vehicle. That isn't a wedding prank. That’s a felony.”
“I didn't steal anything!” Lucas shouted, his voice cracking with sheer terror as he realized the terrifying reality of his situation. “I was just... I was bringing it to the authorities! You two are conspiring against our family! Dad’s going to call every politician he knows—he’ll have your stars stripped, General! You hear me? Both of you are finished!”
The sergeant holding Lucas’s arm looked up at Alexander, holding a black leather briefcase. “General, we searched the vehicle. The encrypted backup hard drive and three confidential deployment files were found right on the passenger seat.”
Alexander didn't look at Lucas. He looked at the briefcase in the sergeant’s hand, then raised his eyes to meet mine.
“Take him to the detention holding facility,” Alexander ordered, his voice cold and devoid of any human emotion. “Process him for unlawful entry, theft of government property, and suspected espionage against a federal installation.”
“No! No, you can’t do this! Emily, please!” Lucas wailed as the MPs hauled him upright, slapping heavy zip-ties around his wrists and shoving him toward the back of a military transport van. “Mom! Mom, help me!”
I watched him go, feeling not a shred of pity, only a cold, heavy emptiness.
Just as the transport doors slammed shut, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket. I pulled it out. It was a text message from an unknown number, accompanied by a single photograph.
I opened the image, and the breath evacuated my lungs entirely.
May you like
It was a picture of my father, standing inside our old family home, holding a second, hidden flash drive—and beside him stood someone I never expected to see within a thousand miles of Virginia.
