Chapter 24 - Breach at the McLean Terminal

The private underground facility hidden beneath the innocuous commercial office park in McLean, Virginia, looked less like a corporate headquarters and more like a hardened NORAD command bunker. Steel blast doors three feet thick protected the perimeter, while internal corridors were lined with biometric retinal scanners and automated defensive turrets recessed into the reinforced concrete ceiling.

Inside the primary observation suite, Director Thomas Sterling stood before a massive curved wall of monitors, his gold-rimmed glasses catching the harsh white glare of cascading diagnostic readouts. His silver hair was impeccably groomed, and his bespoke charcoal suit bore not a single wrinkle despite the midnight hour.

“They’re through the lower utility culverts, Director,” a technician reported frantically, fingers dancing across a master control keyboard. “Thermal signatures indicate three targets approaching Sub-Level 4. They’ve disabled our perimeter reconnaissance drone.”

Sterling didn’t blink. He reached out, picked up a crystal tumbler of Scotch, took a slow, measured sip, and set it down without a sound.

“Let them come,” Sterling said smoothly, his voice devoid of panic, rich with the terrifying calm of a man who owned the courts, the cops, and the constitution. “Activate the primary gas suppression grid in Sector 4. Flush them out into the central atrium. I want Major Carter and General Hale brought to me alive. The boy... dispose of him once we extract the remaining decryption keys from his neural memory.”

Suddenly, the ceiling klaxons across the entire floor shrieked into life, flashing a blinding, rhythmic amber. But instead of the expected hissing hiss of paralyzing neurotoxin, a deafening explosion ripped through the western bulkhead.

The massive steel blast door didn't just open—it blew completely inward, sheared off its hydraulic hinges by a shaped breaching charge planted with surgical precision.

Through the billow of white smoke and pulverized concrete strode Alexander Hale, his HK416 sweeping the room with lethal intent, followed instantly by Emily, who dropped into a firing stance, covering the upper gantry.

“Thomas Sterling,” Alexander growled, his voice cutting through the waring sirens like a razor. “It’s time to settle the tab.”
