Chapter 19 - The Quantum Override

“Come on, execute!” Julian cursed under his breath, sweat pouring down his pale forehead as the terminal screen flashed a blinding, rhythmic crimson warning: CONFLICT DETECTED: OVERRIDE IN PROGRESS.

“Julian, we are out of time!” Emily shouted, firing her final two rounds down the tunnel to keep the advancing mercenaries pinned behind a concrete bend. The slide of her pistol locked back with a dry, empty click. They were out of ammunition.

From around the bend, two fresh operators emerged, their gas masks hissing rhythmically, heavy assault rifles raised to clear the corridor.

Just as the lead mercenary’s finger began to squeeze the trigger, the terminal console beside Julian let out a triumphant, high-pitched chime. The flashing crimson warnings vanished, replaced by a solid, glowing blue banner: DATA TRANSFER COMPLETE. SECURE MASTER LEDGER ARCHIVED TO PENTAGON MAINNET.

“It’s done,” Julian whispered, a grim, exhausted smile touching his lips. “The master ledger is locked inside the Department of Defense vault. Every corporate backer, rogue state actor, and shadow syndicate account just had its offshore assets frozen and flagged for immediate federal seizure. They wanted a quantum leak? I just gave them a digital firing squad.”

At that exact moment, the overhead emergency lights flickered violently and surged back to blinding, full-spectrum white. The localized EMP pulse had cleared; the facility’s primary grid had automatically rebooted under DEFCON-1 override protocols.

The two mercenaries froze mid-advance, their comms headsets instantly crackling with frantic, panicked static as sirens began to wail across the entire Walter Reed complex. Red emergency klaxons spun to life, and overhead loudspeakers boomed a metallic automated warning: FACILITY LOCKDOWN ENGAGED. ALL UNAUTHORIZED PERSONNEL SURRENDER IMMEDIATELY.

Dropping their weapons in realization that their operational anonymity had just been totally destroyed, the mercenaries turned and bolted back up the service tunnel.
