Chapter 10 - The Second Bassinet

Mark stopped dead in his tracks, the color completely draining from his face as the last shred of his defense crumbled into dust. He looked at me, truly looked at me for the first time since I woke up from surgery, and realized that the woman he thought he had manipulated and broken had outsmarted him completely.

"Mr. Reynolds, put your hands behind your back," Detective Hayes commanded, stepping forward as the two troopers moved in with handcuffs ready.

"No—wait! You don't understand, I did it for us! For our future!" Mark thrashed wildly as the cold steel cuffs clicked around his wrists, his face twisting into a mask of ugly desperation as he was shoved against the wall. "Sarah! Please! Think of our family! You can't do this to me!"

"You stopped being family the moment you traded our son for a bribe," I said coldly, watching without a single ounce of pity as they hauled him out of the room.

The heavy door slammed shut behind them, leaving the hospital room dead silent once more, save for the soft breathing of the baby resting safely in my arms.

Detective Hayes lingered by the foot of my bed, offering a firm, respectful nod. "The extraction team is clearing the fourth-floor NICU annex right now, Mrs. Reynolds. Your second son is safe. Nurse Judy is bringing him down to this room right this second."

My breath caught in my throat. Tears spilled over my eyelashes again, but this time, they weren't tears of grief or shock.

Before I could answer, a soft, urgent knock tapped against the door, and it swung wide open, revealing nurse Judy wheeling a second plastic bassinet across the threshold.
