Chapter 4 - The Midnight Alliance

The information hit me like a physical blow, knocking the wind straight out of my lungs. For a moment, the world narrowed down to the hum of the monitors and the wild, frantic pounding of my heart.

"Midnight?" I whispered, tears spilling hot and fast down my cheeks. "They're taking my other baby at midnight?"

"Yes," Judy said, squeezing my hand tighter. "And your husband isn't just going to the parking garage. He’s meeting Evelyn in the basement loading dock to finalize the paperwork for the second handover. He thinks you're too weak to move, too drugged to question anything."

I looked over at the bassinet where my first son lay sleeping, safe for the moment, and then back at Judy. A cold, hard resolve crystallized deep inside my bones, replacing the grief and shock with pure, unadulterated survival instinct. The broken, helpless woman who woke up from surgery three days ago was gone.

"How do we stop them?" I asked, my voice dropping into a steady, chilling calm.

Judy looked surprised by my lack of hysterics, then a grim, determined smile touched her lips. "You can't walk out of here on your own. Your c-section stitches are fresh, and security monitors every exit. But we have three hours before Mark comes back from his 'errand' and before the night shift rotation begins."

"What do we need?"

"We need a distraction, a burner phone, and someone outside this hospital who can't be bought off by Mark's money," Judy said, pulling a small, prepaid smartphone from her pocket and sliding it across the mattress. "I smuggled this in from my locker. My sister is a detective with the municipal police department three towns over. She doesn't take bribes, and she hates men like your husband."

I snatched the burner phone off the sheets, my fingers trembling slightly as I powered it on. "What’s her name?"

"Detective Clara Hayes," Judy said, rattling off a ten-digit number from memory. "Call her. Tell her everything you told me, and tell her to meet us at the service entrance of the fourth-floor NICU at 11:30 PM. I’ll make sure the security cameras in that sector loop a pre-recorded feed during the shift change."

Before I could dial, the heavy handle of the room door began to turn.

Judy leaped backward, snatching up the medical chart and humming softly as she pretended to check the incubator monitors.
