Chapter 6 - The Voice on the Line

The electronic hum of the hospital room seemed to amplify as the phone pressed against my ear, the first ring buzzing through the speaker like a live wire.
Ring.
My eyes were glued to the heavy wooden door, terrified that Mark would cut his phone call short and walk back in before anyone answered. My fingers shook against the plastic casing of the burner phone.
Ring.
"State Police, Detective Hayes," a sharp, professional voice answered on the other end, devoid of any unnecessary pleasantries.
"Detective Hayes," I whispered fiercely, my voice tight and breathless as I clutched the edge of the mattress. "My name is Sarah Reynolds. Nurse Judy gave me your number. You need to listen to me very carefully because my husband is going to try and traffic my newborn son out of this hospital at midnight."
Silence fell on the line for a fraction of a second, followed immediately by the rustle of papers shifting.
"Mrs. Reynolds," Clara Hayes said instantly, her tone shifting from routine professionalism to razor-sharp alertness. "Judy briefed me on an emergency possibility an hour ago. Where are you right now?"
"Room 304, St. Jude’s Memorial," I replied, keeping my eyes locked on the frosted glass panel of the door. "Mark thinks I'm recovering from a c-section and too drugged to know anything. But my second twin—my other son—is currently registered under an alias in the secure NICU annex on the fourth floor. Mark and a woman named Evelyn Vance arranged a private adoption handover for midnight tonight. They have forged documents and payoffs ready."
Detective Hayes let out a cold, sharp breath through her nose. "Evelyn Vance? The art dealer tied to downtown real estate syndicates? Her husband's firm has been under financial surveillance for months."
"I don't care about her corporate crimes," I choked out, a tear finally breaking free and tracking down my cheek. "I care about my baby. Judy said you can help us, but we only have a few hours before Mark returns from his 'errand' and before the night shift rotation."
"Hold on, Sarah," Detective Hayes commanded, her voice resolute. "Do not let your husband know you suspect a thing. Play his game. At 11:15 PM, I am going to walk through the front entrance of that hospital with a federal child-endangerment warrant and two state troopers. We are going to lock down the fourth-floor annex before they can move the baby. But you need to stay in that room and keep him talking."
"I will," I whispered.

Before she could reply, the handle of the door clicked downward.
