Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Corridor

By late afternoon, the hospital room became suffocating. Mark was sitting by the window scrolling through his laptop, handling emails for his architecture firm as if nothing in the world had changed, while our son slept peacefully in the bassinet.

The digital clock on the wall blinked 4:15 PM.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Mark didn't look up from his screen, assuming it was a nurse. "Come in."

The door pushed open, and nurse Judy stepped inside, holding a plastic clipboard and a chart. Her face was an impassive mask of professional neutrality, but as she walked past the foot of my bed, her eyes met mine for a brief, electric second.

"Just routine vitals check for the baby," Judy announced clearly, walking over to the bassinet.

Mark closed his laptop with a quiet snap, standing up to stretch his legs. "Actually, Judy, I need to run down to the parking garage for ten minutes. I left my briefcase in the trunk and a client is breathing down my neck for those zoning drafts. Can you keep an eye on things while I step out?"

"Of course, Mr. Reynolds," Judy replied smoothly, not looking at him. "Take your time."

"I'll be right back, sweetheart," Mark said, leaning over to kiss my cheek once more before walking out the door. The heavy wood door clicked shut behind him.

The moment the lock engaged, Judy abandoned the chart, dropped to her knees beside my bed, and grabbed my hand with trembling fingers.

"Listen to me very carefully," Judy whispered urgently, her eyes wide with fear. "I shouldn't be doing this. If security finds out I gave you that video, I lose my license, and worse. That woman who took your baby—her name is Evelyn Vance. She’s a high-society art dealer downtown. Your husband has been sleeping with her for two years, and she couldn't conceive. This was their arrangement from the start."

My chest seized. The room spun. "An arrangement? He sold our son?"

"Worse than that," Judy breathed, glancing nervously toward the hallway window. "She paid him half a million dollars up front to secure a healthy male heir from his marriage, while you were supposed to believe both babies died. But there was a complication in the delivery room—one of the twins had a minor respiratory issue that required emergency NICU monitoring, so Mark panicked, took the healthy one first, and left the other behind with me because he didn't know what to do with a sick infant!"

"Wait," I gasped, clutching the sheets. "My other son is still here? In the hospital?"

May you like

"He's in the secure NICU annex on the fourth floor under an alias," Judy whispered rapidly. "Mark registered him under a false surname this morning, claiming the mother had surrendered him, and arranged for a private adoption agency to pick him up at midnight tonight."
