Chapter 8 - The Waiting Game

The hours bled together in a agonizingly slow crawl of ticking clock hands and whispered hospital announcements over the PA system. 9:00 PM. 10:15 PM. 11:00 PM.

Mark had finally curled up on the small vinyl armchair in the corner of the room, his eyes closed as he drifted into a light sleep, completely confident that his plan was running like clockwork. He had no idea that across the city, a state detective and federal officers were mobilizing to dismantle his entire fabricated life.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Every time a cart squeaked down the hallway or a nurse's footsteps paused outside room 304, my breath caught in my throat.

At 11:20 PM, my hand slid slowly beneath the mattress, my fingers wrapping around the cold plastic of the burner phone.

The screen lit up with a silent text message from an unlisted number: We are at the east loading dock. Entering the building now. Two units securing stairwell B, one unit heading directly to the fourth-floor NICU annex. Hang tight, Sarah. We're moving.

A shiver raced down my spine. It was happening.

I glanced over at Mark. He was still dead asleep in the corner chair, his chest rising and falling in steady, rhythmic beats.

Ten agonizing minutes crawled past. The digital clock on the wall blinked 11:30 PM.

Suddenly, a sharp, muffled commotion echoed from down the hallway—the distinct sound of heavy boots, raised voices, and hurried commands cutting through the quiet night shift atmosphere.

Mark’s eyes snapped open. He bolted upright from the chair, staring toward the doorway with a sudden, panicked expression on his face.

"What the hell...?" Mark muttered, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket with trembling fingers.
