Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Truth

The rain seemed to roar louder, a deafening white noise filling the alley as Dante stood motionless in the downpour. The words hung in the air between them, heavy and undeniable, stripping away every defense Marin had built over the last four months.

Dante ignored Delia. He ignored Arthur Sterling standing in the shadows of the sedan. He walked past them both in two long, measured strides, pulled open the passenger door of the SUV, and stared down at Marin.

His face was completely devoid of color, but his eyes burned with an intensity that burned right through her soul.

"Is it true?" he asked. His voice wasn't angry. It was shockingly, terrifyingly quiet.

Marin couldn't look away. The tears spilled over her cheeks, hot and unheeded, as she looked at the man who had accidentally wandered into her life during a thunderstorm—the man she had tried so desperately to protect from the wreckage of her world.

"Yes," she whispered, her voice breaking on the syllable. "It's yours."

Behind Dante, Delia’s triumphant smile faltered, replaced by a sudden flash of rage as she realized her grand reveal hadn't triggered a violent explosion, but something far more dangerous: a bond she could never break.

Dante didn't say a word. He reached into the car, his large, warm hand sliding behind the back of Marin’s neck, and pulled her gently out of the vehicle and into the shelter of his coat, shielding her completely from the rain, from Delia, and from the cold, watching eyes of his family.

"Get back in the car, Uncle," Dante said over his shoulder, his voice dropping into a register that made Arthur Sterling take an involuntary step backward. "And tell Delia that her services are no longer required in this city."

He opened the rear door of the SUV, helping Marin and her sleeping sister inside, before sliding in beside them and slamming the door shut. The vehicle pulled away from the curb instantly, leaving Delia and Arthur standing alone in the dark Chicago alley.

As the SUV merged back into the midnight traffic, Dante pulled Marin close against his shoulder. He looked down at her, his expression softening with a fierce, unbreakable resolve.

"We have a lot to talk about," Dante murmured, his thumb gently wiping a tear from her cheek. "Starting with how we protect what's ours."

Marin leaned her head against his chest, listening to the steady, powerful beat of his heart. For the first time in months, the weight in her chest lifted. But as the car turned toward the estate, she knew the real battle hadn't ended—it had only just begun.
