Chapter 7 - Ledger of Debts

The grand library of Dante’s estate smelled of old leather, aged whiskey, and a fire that had long since burned down to glowing embers. Outside, the Chicago rain lashed against floor-to-ceiling windows, but inside, the air was suffocatingly still.

Marin stood by the mahogany desk, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. She had spent the last hour laying out every brutal detail of her relationship with Sutton Vane: the emergency medical bills for Nell, the predatory loan terms, the subtle threats that escalated week by week, and the terrifying realization that Sutton had somehow manipulated the state assistance board to cut off her sister's funding.

Dante listened in absolute silence. He sat behind the desk, his fingers steepled beneath his chin, his dark eyes never leaving her face. He didn't interrupt, but with every mention of Sutton’s name, the tension in his jaw tightened.

"So he wasn't just a local loan shark," Dante said, his voice dangerously calm when she finally finished. "He was auditing you."

"Auditing me?" Marin echoed, confused. "For what? I'm nobody. I clean tables and pay for medicine."

"Nobody with a normal background gets targeted by an intermediary of the Sterling organization unless they carry value," Dante said, standing up and walking toward the window. He looked out at the dark expanse of the lake. "Sutton Vane hasn't owned Sullivan's Bar in five years. It's a front. A quiet clearinghouse for information and low-level laundering in the South Loop."

Marin felt the breath leave her lungs. "A front? But he acted like he was barely paying the rent..."

"A good lie is built on misery," Dante said without turning around. "He kept you desperate on purpose. He kept you working late, kept you exhausted, and kept you dependent on him so that when the time came, you'd have nowhere else to turn."

She stared at his broad back, a cold wave of realization washing over her. "Delia. Delia introduced me to Sullivan's Bar. She said her cousin knew the owner and could get me an evening shift with flexible hours so I could take care of Nell."

Dante turned slowly, his gaze heavy with an unspoken truth. "Delia didn't just introduce you. She placed you there. She’s been building a network of leverage around you for years, Marin. And the night you walked into my hotel during the storm..." He paused, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Was it really an accident?"

The question hit Marin like a physical blow. She staggered back a step, the room suddenly feeling too small. "You think I planned it? You think I was working with Delia to trap you?"

"I think someone orchestrated every single step of that night," Dante said, his eyes searching hers for any sign of deception. "And right now, the only person who can prove otherwise is the man sitting in an empty bar downtown waiting for us."
