Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Ward

The fluorescent lights of Chicago Memorial Hospital buzzed with a headache-inducing hum. It was past two in the morning, but Marin couldn't sleep. She sat in the vinyl armchair beside Nell’s hospital bed, watching the steady green lines of the heart monitor rise and fall. Nell looked so small beneath the white sheets, her pale face flushed with the fever that always accompanied her flare-ups.

A soft click at the door made Marin stiffen.

She expected a nurse with routine medication. Instead, Sutton Vane stepped into the dim room, closing the door quietly behind him. He wasn't wearing his usual sweaty restaurant uniform; instead, he wore a tailored trench coat that looked entirely too expensive for a local bar manager.

Marin stood up instantly, stepping between Sutton and the bed. "What are you doing here? Visiting hours ended hours ago."

Sutton smiled, sliding his hands into his pockets. "Relax, sweetheart. I’m just here to check on our favorite cardiac patient. And, of course, to talk about your debt."

"We have nothing to talk about," Marin whispered fiercely, keeping her voice low so she wouldn't wake Nell. "I gave you half my paycheck on Tuesday."

"Your paycheck?" Sutton let out a dry, humorless chuckle. He took a step closer, his eyes scanning the expensive medical equipment surrounding Nell. "Marin, let's be real. That little drop in the bucket doesn't even cover the interest, let alone the special favors I had to pull to get her this room in the first place."

"You didn't pull any favors," Marin said, her anger finally overriding her fear. "The state assistance covers this room."

"Does it?" Sutton raised an eyebrow, stepping closer until Marin could smell the faint scent of stale whiskey and expensive cologne. "The administrative board changed their minds yesterday afternoon. Funding cut. Unless someone steps in with a very generous donation, little Nell here gets transferred to a public ward by Monday morning."

Marin’s blood ran cold. A public ward meant delayed care, shared rooms, and a drastic drop in the sterile environment Nell’s weakened heart required. It was a death sentence disguised as bureaucratic red tape.

"You did this," Marin accused, her voice shaking.

"I’m just a businessman pointing out economic realities," Sutton said smoothly. "Though, if you're smart, you can make all of this go away. My friend at the club tonight—the one with the deep pockets and the security detail—he’s looking for someone discreet. Someone who knows how to keep her mouth shut."

Marin froze. "What are you talking about?"

"Delia has big plans, Marin. And she’s smart enough to align herself with the right people. But you—you’re walking around with a secret that could blow the whole operation wide open. Dante Sterling doesn't like surprises."

Sutton leaned in close, his breath hot against her ear. "Drop out of sight. Leave the city. Or tomorrow morning, Nell loses her bed, and you lose whatever little protection you think you have."

Before Marin could answer, the door swung open wide.

Standing in the doorway was Dante Sterling himself, flanked by two towering men in dark suits. His gaze swept over Sutton standing too close to Marin, then locked onto Marin’s pale, terrified face.

"Is there a problem here?" Dante asked, his voice cutting through the sterile air like glass.
