Chapter 5 - The Midnight Transfer

The black SUV sped through the deserted Chicago streets, the rain slicking the asphalt and reflecting the neon glow of storefronts. Marin sat in the backseat, watching Nell sleep peacefully against the plush leather headrest. Her sister’s breathing was steady, monitored by a portable cardiac unit supplied by Dante’s private medical staff.

It felt like she was living someone else’s life. Twenty-four hours ago, she was scrubbing floors at Sullivan's Bar, drowning in debt to Sutton Vane, and hiding her growing pregnancy from the world. Now, she was being relocated to an armored waterfront estate under the direct protection of a man the FBI spent years trying to indict.

In the front passenger seat, Dante sat in silence, staring out the window at the dark river. He hadn't spoken since they left the hospital. The tension inside the vehicle was palpable, a heavy, electric charge born of unspoken truths and impending reckonings.

The SUV turned down a private, tree-lined drive guarded by wrought-iron gates that swung open automatically at their approach. Beyond them stood a sprawling, limestone estate overlooking Lake Michigan, dark and imposing against the stormy night sky.

As the car came to a smooth stop in front of the grand entrance, Dante turned around to look at Marin.

"You're safe here," he said. "Nobody touches you or your sister inside these gates."

"For how long?" Marin asked, her voice tight. "Until Delia figures out a new way to destroy me? Or until you realize I'm keeping something from you?"

Dante’s eyes narrowed slightly, catching the flash of lightning outside. He didn't ask what she meant. He already knew she was hiding something; he was a man who collected secrets the way other people collected art.

"Let her try," Dante said softly. "Delia thinks she’s playing chess, but she doesn't realize she’s just a piece on the board."

Before Marin could reply, the driver’s radio crackled to life. A tense, hurried voice cut through the static.

Boss. We have a situation at the downtown penthouse. Delia wasn't alone. She had a visitor waiting in her private study about twenty minutes before our team arrived.

Dante’s expression darkened instantly. "Who?"

Sutton Vane, boss. And according to the security cameras we just decrypted... he wasn't just there to talk. He handed her a file with your private security codes.

Marin stopped breathing.

Dante slowly turned his head to look at Marin, his dark eyes devoid of warmth, reflecting a betrayal that changed the entire landscape of the war they had just entered.
