Chapter 8 - The Return to Sullivan's

The neon sign above Sullivan's Bar flickered through the sheet rain, buzzing a sickly amber light into the deserted street. The black SUV pulled into the alley behind the kitchen entrance, its engine idling with a low, predatory hum.
Inside, Marin sat in the passenger seat, her hands trembling in her lap. Dante reached across the console, his warm fingers wrapping firmly around her cold hand. It was the first time he had offered a gesture of pure, uncalculated comfort.
"Stay in the car," Dante instructed, his tone absolute. "If I'm not back out in twenty minutes, my team secures the perimeter."
"No," Marin said, pulling her hand free and reaching for the door handle. "You don't understand, Dante. Sutton isn't just some thug you can intimidate out of a room. He knows how Delia thinks. He knows what buttons to push. If you go in there alone, you're walking into a trap."
"That's exactly why you're staying here," Dante replied, his hand stopping her door from opening. "It's my world. Let me handle the monsters."
"This isn't just your world anymore!" Marin snapped, her voice breaking through the quiet interior of the car. She turned to face him, the tears of frustration finally spilling over her lashes. "You think this is just about security codes and business fronts? Delia didn't just target you. She targeted me because she knew... because she knew everything!"
Dante went completely still. The fierce, protective anger in his eyes faltered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a sudden, terrifying clarity. "Knew what, Marin?"
She opened her mouth, the secret rising in her throat like fire. The baby. The life growing inside her that connected them in a way Delia could never fake or manipulate. She looked into Dante's dark, searching eyes, realizing that if she didn't tell him now, the lies would consume them both.
Before the words could cross her lips, a sudden flash of headlights cut through the alley rain.
A sleek black sedan pulled up directly blocking the SUV’s exit. The rear door of the sedan popped open, and a figure stepped out into the downpour, holding an umbrella.
It wasn't Sutton Vane. It was Delia.

And she wasn't alone.
