Chapter 6 - The Broken Alibi

The silence inside the SUV felt heavier than lead. The radio crackled again with low-frequency static, but Marin didn't hear it. The name echoed in her head like a recurring nightmare. Sutton Vane.
A bar manager who supposedly struggled to keep his business afloat. A man who had cornered her in a dirty hallway, squeezed her for repayments, and threatened her sister's hospital bed. How could a petty, small-time tyrant like Sutton have access to Dante Sterling’s high-security penthouse codes? How did a local creep connect to a woman like Delia Marsh, who was currently trying to pass herself off as a mafia boss's bride?
Dante turned away from the window, his face carved from stone. His dark eyes locked onto Marin, and for a terrifying second, suspicion flashed through them—sharp, cold, and calculating.
"You said you worked for him," Dante said quietly, his voice dangerously low. "At Sullivan's Bar."
"I do—did," Marin stammered, her heart hammering against her ribs. She threw her hands up, the defensive panic raw in her throat. "Dante, I swear to God, I didn't know. I’ve spent the last three months trying to avoid Sutton Vane. He's just a manager who preys on people who owe him money. He has nothing to do with this world!"
"People in my position don't just 'happen' to work for men who hold my security credentials, Marin," Dante countered, though the heat in his voice was tempered by a deeper, colder realization. He looked back at the driver. "Where is Sutton now?"
He left the penthouse through the underground service elevator three minutes before our team breached the floor, boss. He left a burner phone on the desk with a pre-recorded message.
"Play it," Dante ordered.
A burst of static filled the car, followed by Sutton’s oily, familiar laugh.
“Sorry to crash the party, Mr. Sterling,” Sutton’s recorded voice purred through the speaker. “Looks like your little security perimeter has a few holes in it. Tell the cleaning girl she left a very interesting trail behind her. If you want the rest of the files—and the real truth about your precious fiancée—you know where to find the bar.”
The transmission clicked dead.
Marin sat frozen in the backseat, staring at the dark leather of the seat in front of her. The trap hadn't just closed around her; it had expanded. Sutton wasn't just a sleazy manager. He was a player in whatever game Delia had engineered, and somehow, Marin was the linchpin holding the entire conspiracy together.
Dante turned back to Marin. The suspicion in his eyes had shifted into something far more dangerous—a cold, strategic focus. He reached out, his fingers gently catching her chin and forcing her to look at him.

"You’re going to tell me everything you know about Sutton Vane," Dante said softly, "starting from the very first day you met him."
