Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Circle

The afternoon sun broke through the heavy gray clouds over the harbor, casting long, golden shafts of light across the damp asphalt of the shipping terminals. The federal padlock seals had been stripped from the main gates, and the first container cranes were beginning to hum back to life in the distance.
Inside the quiet master suite of the Moretti estate, the room smelled of fresh linen and faint antiseptic from the hospital discharge.
Claire sat in the cushioned armchair by the bay window, watching the harbor activity outside while holding the sleeping infant bundled in a soft pink blanket. The door clicked open, and Dominic stepped inside, carrying a small silver tray with a cup of tea. He set it down on the side table without a word, then pulled up a chair and sat beside her.
They hadn't spoken about Julian’s parting words during the car ride home from the restaurant. The silence between them had been heavy, fragile, and charged with unspoken reckoning.
"The federal prosecutor called an hour ago," Dominic said, breaking the quiet. "Julian’s assets have been formally seized and redirected into the harbor restoration fund. The formal charges against you have been officially expunged."
Claire nodded slowly, not taking her eyes off the baby’s face. "And Sabrina?"
"She tried to cut a secondary deal by claiming she had documents linking my father to Julian’s original disappearance," Dominic replied, a faint, bitter smile touching his lips. "The U.S. Attorney’s office laughed her out of the room. Her trial starts next month."
Claire turned her head, meeting his storm-gray eyes. The tension that had held her shoulders rigid for days finally began to ease. "It’s over, then. The empire is back."
"Not the empire," Dominic corrected softly, reaching out to gently trace the edge of the baby’s blanket with his index finger. "Something better."
He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out the platinum-and-diamond wedding band, and placed it on the small wooden table between them. It rested beside a fresh envelope bearing the official seal of the state vital statistics bureau—the newly amended birth certificate filed that morning.
Claire looked down at the envelope, her breath catching. She reached out, picked it up, and slid the single sheet of thick paper out.
Under Father, the name read: Dominic Moretti.
No conditions. No asterisks. No hidden clauses left behind by a ghost.
"I didn't need to see the state DNA registry to know, Claire," Dominic said, his voice dropping into a low, steady rumble of absolute conviction. "The moment I heard that monitor flatline in the hospital, I knew what I stood to lose. Everything else was just noise."
Claire’s eyes welled with tears, but this time, there was no pain in them—only a deep, profound release. With trembling fingers, she picked up her platinum wedding band from the table.
She held it out to him.
Dominic took the ring from her palm. He didn't slide it onto her finger immediately. Instead, he took her hand, kissed her knuckles, and then slid the band back into its rightful place, where it locked securely against her skin.
"We still have a lot of history to unpack," Claire whispered, a small, genuine smile breaking through. "And a very stubborn baby to raise."
May you like
"We have all the time in the world," Dominic replied, wrapping his hand firmly around hers.
Outside the window, the fog over the North River lifted completely, revealing the open shipping lanes stretching out toward the horizon under a clear, bright sky. Yet deep inside the estate’s private security archive—far below the floorboards of the main office—a secondary, encrypted backup drive on an unlisted server suddenly blinked green, transmitting a silent data packet to an unknown receiver three thousand miles away across the Atlantic, leaving a single unanswered question waiting in the dark.
