Chapter 7 - The Ledger and the Ring

The dim light of dawn crept through the venetian blinds of the safe house kitchen, casting long, fractured shadows across the scarred wooden table. Lorenzo sat opposite Dominic, sliding a thick ledger across the surface. The pages were yellowed with age, bearing the handwriting of Dominic’s late father.

"Julian is alive," Dominic said, his voice flat, stripped of all inflection. He stared down at the ledger without touching it. "For ten years, we poured whiskey on his grave, and all the while he was pulling the strings from an offshore shell company funded by our own family accounts."

"He never left the city, Dominic," Lorenzo replied, pouring a cup of black coffee. "He went underground after the dock wars, waiting for your father to die so he could inherit the maritime infrastructure through a legal loophole tied to pre-incorporation loans. And he knew the only person standing in his way of complete control over the shipping lanes wasn't me, and it wasn't the commission. It was Claire."

Dominic clenched his jaw, the memory of Claire’s confession in the hospital room replaying in his mind. She had carried that secret alone, paying extortion money to a ghost to keep her child safe from a world she had tried to escape. And he—blinded by his own arrogance and the planted evidence supplied by Sabrina and Marcus Vance—had thrown her out into the freezing rain.

"Where is he, Lorenzo?" Dominic asked quietly.

"He’s not hiding in a warehouse," Lorenzo said, leaning forward. "He’s sitting in the executive suite of the federal courthouse downtown, holding a meeting with the U.S. Attorney’s office as a key 'cooperating witness' who is helping dismantle the Moretti syndicate. He has full immunity. If you walk in there with a gun, you walk straight into a federal trap."

"I’m not taking a gun," Dominic said, standing up from the table. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out the platinum wedding band Claire had dropped on the marble floor days ago. He turned the metal over in his palm, feeling the cool weight of it. "I’m taking his legacy."

Lorenzo raised an eyebrow. "Explain."

"Julian thinks he won because he exposed Claire’s past and seized the harbor titles," Dominic said, his eyes hardening with a cold, calculated clarity. "He thinks the two point eight million was a bribe. But he doesn't know what Claire actually wrote in the memo line of that wire transfer before Sabrina intercepted it."

Lorenzo paused, his coffee cup halfway to his mouth. "What did she write?"

"She didn't pay him off," Dominic said, a grim smile touching the corner of his mouth. "She assigned the primary mortgage lien of the entire harbor real estate portfolio to a blind trust bearing our daughter’s name. If Julian tries to foreclose on the terminals, he triggers an immediate federal investigation into his own alias—the very identity he used to fake his death ten years ago."

Lorenzo let out a low, gravelly chuckle, shaking his head. "She outplayed a ghost."

"And now we’re going to collect," Dominic said, slipping the wedding ring back onto his own pinky finger like a seal of office. "Get our remaining loyalists on the secure comms. We’re not raiding the courthouse. We’re inviting Julian to a family reunion."
