Chapter 8 - The Empty Chair

The private dining room on the top floor of the Grand Continental Hotel was silent, draped in heavy velvet curtains that blocked out the morning glare of the city. At the center of a mahogany banquet table designed for twelve sat a single leather chair.

Julian Vance did not look like a man who had been dead for a decade. His hair was silvered at the temples, combed back with meticulous precision, and his tailored navy suit fit him with the effortless elegance of someone who owned the room before he even walked into it.

The double doors swung open, and Dominic stepped into the room alone. He didn't carry a weapon. His hands were tucked casually into his trouser pockets as he walked slowly toward the table, stopping opposite his uncle.

Julian smiled, raising a crystal tumbler of scotch. "I have to admit, nephew, I didn't think you had the stomach to track me down. Most men in your position would be sitting in a federal holding cell right now, wondering how their entire life evaporated in forty-eight hours."

"You always were theatrical, Uncle," Dominic said, pulling out a chair and sitting down without an invitation. "Faking your own death in a warehouse fire takes dedication. Though hiding behind a federal immunity deal while letting a corrupt lawyer do your dirty work? That’s just lazy."

Julian’s smile didn't reach his eyes. He set his glass down on the polished wood with a soft clink. "Business is business, Dominic. Your father took everything that belonged to me thirty years ago. I simply waited for the right moment to repossess it. And as for your wife—well, it’s unfortunate she chose to align herself with a sinking ship. Though I suppose you already know about her little secret, don't you?"

Dominic didn't flinch. He kept his voice completely level. "I know that you spent ten years running shell companies out of the Cayman Islands using stolen syndicate capital."

"I ran my capital," Julian corrected smoothly. "Capital your father stole when he pushed me out of the shipping cartel. And now, thanks to the federal seizure orders and Claire’s little financial indiscretion, the entire port belongs to my holding corporation. By noon today, the bankruptcy court will sign off on the final transfer."

"Will they?" Dominic asked quietly.

Julian frowned, a flicker of uncertainty crossing his features. "What are you talking about?"

Dominic reached into his jacket, pulled out a certified banking document, and slid it across the table.

Julian picked it up, his eyes scanning the first few lines. As he read further, the color slowly drained from his face. The polished composure cracked, revealing the desperate, cornered man beneath.

"This... this is impossible," Julian stammered, looking up. "This is an assignment of primary mortgage liens to a minor's trust. If this is filed with the land registry—"

"It was filed three hours ago, while you were busy having breakfast," Dominic interrupted, leaning forward. "Claire didn't pay you off with that two point eight million, Julian. She used your own shell corporation’s routing numbers to purchase the defaulted debt on your primary offshore accounts. The moment you foreclose on the harbor, the federal banking commission automatically audits your alias—and your immunity deal is instantly revoked for wire fraud and identity theft."

Julian slammed his hands down on the table, rising half out of his seat. "You bluffing bastard! If I go down, I take Claire’s secret—and your precious child—straight to the U.S. Attorney!"

The door to the private dining room clicked open behind Julian.

Claire stood in the doorway, pale but standing upright under her own power, wearing a charcoal wool coat. Beside her stood Marcus Vance—no longer wearing his lawyer’s suit, but a federal witness protection jacket, holding a signed affidavit bearing his own confession.

"You don't have to take anyone anywhere, Julian," Claire said, her voice clear, steady, and carrying the absolute chill of winter. "Because Marcus already filed his statement with the Department of Justice twenty minutes ago. The secret is out. And so are you."
