Chapter 3 - The Sterile Corridor

The concrete floor of the St. Jude’s basement parking garage was slick with gray sludge and the steady drip of overhead steam pipes. Dominic moved through the shadows with the silent, practiced efficiency of a man who had spent a decade controlling the city's darkest underbelly, Lorenzo’s old driver trailing a few paces behind with a heavy duffel bag.

"Sector four elevators are locked by biometric scanner," the driver muttered, pulling a black electronic brick from his coat. "Even with my override codes, the federal police have a secondary lockdown on the maternity wing."

"We don't need the elevator," Dominic said, pointing up toward the rusted metal grating of the maintenance ventilation shaft running parallel to the ceiling. "That leads directly to the HVAC control room behind the west wing pharmacy. From there, it’s a twenty-foot drop into the utility corridor fifty yards from Claire’s room."

Without waiting for a response, Dominic grabbed a rusted overhead pipe, pulled his muscular frame upward with a fluid, silent motion, and shoved the ventilation grate aside. The air inside the shaft was thick with dust and the sterile chemical smell of hospital disinfectant.

Ten minutes later, crouched behind a louvered metal vent, Dominic looked down into a brightly lit, sterile hallway.

Two armed federal marshals stood at attention outside a heavy double door bearing a red RESTRICTED ACCESS sign. Through the reinforced glass window of the room opposite them, Dominic caught his first glimpse of Claire.

She was propped up against white pillows, her face pale as porcelain against the hospital gown, an intravenous drip taped to the back of her hand. Her eyes were closed, her chest rising and falling in a shallow, exhausted rhythm. She looked fragile, stripped of the fierce, unyielding dignity she had worn like armor in the boardroom.

A tight, agonizing knot twisted in Dominic’s chest. He had put her there. If she had been killed on that highway, or if their child—

The elevator bell at the end of the corridor chimed, cutting his thoughts short.

Heavy footsteps echoed down the linoleum floor. Marcus Vance walked into view, accompanied by two private security guards in dark suits carrying legal briefcases. Marcus stopped in front of the federal marshals, flashing a laminated court document.

"I’m attorney Marcus Vance," Dominic heard Marcus say clearly through the thin metal of the vent. "I have the emergency medical guardianship and asset seizure warrant signed by Judge Miller. I need a private consultation with the patient immediately."

One of the marshals scanned the document, nodded, and stepped aside, unlocking the heavy door.

Dominic didn't hesitate. With a sharp kick of his boot, he blew the ventilation louvers outward, dropping silently onto the linoleum floor behind the group before any of them could react.

"Leaving so soon, Marcus?" Dominic’s voice cut through the sterile corridor like a blade.

Marcus spun around, his face draining of color as he found himself staring down the barrel of a heavy-caliber firearm Dominic had pulled from the driver's duffel bag. The federal marshals immediately drew their sidearms, shouting for Dominic to drop his weapon.

"Stand down!" Dominic roared, his eyes locked on Marcus. "Or the first bullet goes straight through your lawyer's skull."
