Chapter 9 - The Price of a Name

The silence in the private dining room was absolute, broken only by the hum of the overhead ventilation. Julian Vance stood frozen with his hands braced against the mahogany table, his eyes darting from Dominic to Claire, and finally resting on Marcus.

"You signed a cooperation rider?" Julian hissed, his voice dropping into a venomous whisper as he glared at his nephew. "You sold out your own family for a federal plea deal?"

Marcus wouldn't meet his uncle's eyes. He kept his gaze locked on the carpet, his jaw tight. "Family doesn't mean much when you're asking me to take the fall for a multi-million-dollar conspiracy, Uncle. The U.S. Attorney already has the hard drives from your Cayman server. It’s over."

Julian slowly straightened up, his chest rising and falling in sharp, shallow breaths. The mask of aristocratic detachment was completely gone, replaced by the bitter, weathered malice of a man who realized he had been outplayed at his own game. He looked at Dominic, a thin, humorless smile touching his lips.

"You think you won, boy?" Julian muttered, shaking his head slowly. "You think destroying me saves your marriage? You think raising another man's child in the ruins of a collapsed empire makes you a king?"

Dominic didn't raise his voice. He stood up from his chair, walking around the table until he stood mere inches from his uncle. His face was a mask of cold, unyielding granite.

"The child is mine, Julian," Dominic said, every word hitting the air like lead. "Blood or no blood, she carries my name, she lives in my house, and she belongs to my family. And you—you're going to spend the rest of your life answering to federal judges for a ghost that finally ran out of time."

Before Julian could answer, heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway outside. Two federal marshals in tactical vests pushed past the double doors, their badges flashing in the ambient light.

"Julian Vance?" the lead marshal asked, stepping up to the table. "You're under arrest for wire fraud, identity theft, and obstruction of federal maritime commerce. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."

Julian didn't resist. As the cold steel of the handcuffs clicked around his wrists, he cast one final, lingering glance at Claire.

"You think this is the end of it, Claire," Julian whispered as the marshals pulled him toward the exit. "Once the background checks clear the state registry, the real truth about your past won't stay buried in a courtroom. Dominic built an empire on secrets. And secrets always come due."

The heavy doors closed behind them, leaving the room in a heavy, echoing quiet.

Claire exhaled slowly, leaning back against the doorframe as the adrenaline finally drained from her system. Dominic turned toward her, walking across the room until he stood right in front of her.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The air between them was thick with everything that had been broken, hidden, and nearly destroyed over the past week.

"Are you alright?" Dominic asked softly, his hand hovering near her arm before dropping back to his side, hesitant, as if waiting for permission to touch her.

Claire looked down at his hand, then lifted her gaze to meet his eyes. She slowly raised her left hand, holding it out between them. Her ring finger was bare.

"The harbor is safe, Julian is gone, and the feds are dropping the asset freeze," Claire said, her voice quiet but unflinching. "Marcus is in custody, and Sabrina is facing ten years for her part in the frame-up. But you haven't answered my question, Dominic."

Dominic frowned. "What question?"

May you like

"When you said the child is yours," Claire whispered, her eyes searching his face for any trace of doubt, "did you mean it because of blood... or because you're afraid of what the truth actually is?"
